Want a new .40,narrowed my choices down.Any suggestion?

HK 40 full size. Put a Hogue Handall on it, the checkering on the front strap is just insane :) You sure as hell won't drop it, but after 100 rnds or so, it just plain hurts!

I thought long and hard about the sig/hk thing, in the end I felt more comfortable with the HK: it shot better out of the gate in my hand, had the right features and it's built to take a hell of a beating. It's also the lightest recoiling .40 i've ever fired. The recoil springs do work...it's noticeable. I also feel the bore axis of the Sigs is a little high for me. They feel squirrley...but that hasn't kept the P220 off my short list ;)

*pulls out one of those new gold plated dollars with the indian girl on it* Heads, it's the HK USP full size, Tails it's the Sig P226... *tosses the dollar high into the air and watches as it hits the table and spins* I ruled out the Steyr because I just don't like the feel of the gun or the sights... *shakes his head as the dollar comes to a stop--on it's side!* Imagine that?! It's a tie...

Whichever one of those two fits your hand better is the one I'd go with.

As someone stated earlier, Take a look at the Beretta Cougar series. I have and carry a Cougar 8040 and love it. Also you couldn't go wrong with a Glock 27 if you like Glocks.
Just my .02 worth :)

I prefer the Sig and don't be fooled that it's a delicate piece of machinery that you have to baby; Sigs can take a lot more abuse than people think. I've shot my Sigs without cleaning for a whole year and never a problem. The newer P226's in 9mm/.40/.357Sig all have milled stainless steel slides. Older model German-made P226 9mm's have folded metal slides.

Get the one that's best for you obviously. My big gripe with the USP's are the trigger pulls, IMHO awful. You can carry condition one so that's useful. Heck, get all three, just have to decide in which order you want to get them.

I own 2 40s a Glock 23 and USP40C. I like them both, but the USP edges out the Glock. I would recommend tht USP40C. More durable finish than the Sig. The Steyr is too much like the Glock; why not get something different. I have a Hogue Handall rubber grip on my 40C and it is great. Neither the G23 or 40C feel the greatest with the stock grip.

You wanted variety and it is to be used at the range and home defense. All good pistols, but the Steyr M40 is just an improved G23 that you can't get full cap mags for. The Steyr and USP both have plastic frames like the Glock you already have. That leaves the two SIG. I would say go with the P226 since it is bigger than a G23 and has an alloy frame, BUT since you insist on .40 cal you can't get full cap mags for it. At least with the P229 you can buy a 12 round mag and Crimson Trace makes LaserGrips for it you are so inclined. You could also dress up the P229 with custom grips easier than you can with any of the plastics. So based on your criteria I would go with a SIG P229.

I have both a SIG 229 and HK compact. Both are super. I find carrying the HK easier because it's lighter. Both are super and have never hiccuped at anything I've fed them. Either way, you'll have done well.

H&K, try the size of the full, and the compact to see which fits you better.

Thanks to all who have replied.

I've decided my next .40 will be the Steyr M. My decision is based on several factors, but was reinforced after shooting another range rental alongside my G-23.

For me atleast, to shoot one is to want one.
However, the decision was tough, as all are excellent pistols.

Thanks again everyone!

Go with the USP Compact. Better trigger than the full size and every bit as accurate. The 229 is great but the tolerances are too close and the chamber is NOT fully supported like the H&K. The 40 is a VERY high pressure round. The H&K is made to function when VERY dirty... the SIG is not.

Where the heck did you get that idea. The SIG has a FULLY supported chamber. No less so than the USP. And the SIG can operate just fine when totally filthy. You must be thinking of some other gun, because I know it aint the SIG you are talking about.

You know, you're where I was a few months ago. I read and talked with people and looked around a long time for my first pistol, which I bought a month or so ago -- a NIB Steyr M40. I want to like it, I do, I want to shoot it and carry it and one day remember the first-timedness as fondly as some other first times ;-) but I just don't, and it's for reasons which I'll admit may not apply to you.

I didn't know how much I liked having a decocker, an exposed hammer, adjustable sights, std capacity mags, tons of available accessories/gear and other such things which go along with semi-s that have been around longer.

I do love the fit and feel of the weapon, it's got minimal recoil, it's extremely well put together, (most of) the guys at the range are impressed and it just looks really cool, but I don't know if that's enough for me anymore. I'm shopping for an H&K USP or USP C.

You could look at it this way: these weapons are tools, and no-one's got just one tool in the toolbox, right?

Weighed the same choices a couple months ago and bought the HK USP.

I'd make the same decision again today.
