Hello everyboby! Here's the deal, I already own a G23, but am looking for some variety. Here is what I've narrowed it down to:

HK USP fullsize or compact.

Sig p229/226.

Steyr M40.

Would appreciate all the opinions I can get. Thanks in advance...{long shot}

Sig P-226. Absolutely excellent in .40 S&W (accuracy, quality, reliability, durability, design, manufacture) with easy conversion to .357 Sig.

HK ~ Great gun, very accurate, very durable, a bit bulky.

Sig ~ Sweetest gun to shoot, period. The tooling job is so good I'd eat off of it but I'm scared to ruin it.

Steyr ~ My new favorite. All the Glock goodies, plus some more like fully supported chamber, load indicator, cool sights, 2 extra safeties compared to the glock, and you still get the tenifer finish...

There are no "losers" so go with the one best for you. All of them are great guns. All that is left, is all subjective.

I'll second George: What are you going to do with it?

If you are going to camp or fish, take the HK: Durable finish, rugged, easy to opperate controls, accurate as hell. FWIW, so long as your hands are big enough, I would take a fullsize as it has the two spring recoil reduction system instead of just one spring and a plastic bushing.

If you are just going to target shoot it or use it for home defense, take the SIG: finely machined, sweet trigger, nice piece of machinery to own. I think I would go with the 229 onm this one as it is in production and I have heard good things about the slide... Dont know for sure, but I thought that the P226 had a folded metal pinned block slide instead of a milled slide.

I did a lot of testing at the range between SIG and HK before I bought my USP45fullsize and pretty much thought the same thing everyone else has here.

The Steyr? Dont know anything about it! :]

J.T.

As always, FWIW,IMHO, YMMV, and all that

Long Shot, it may not give you the variety you want but you can't go wrong with a Glock 27. I like this weapon second only to my Browning High-Power MKIII 40 S&W. If the Glock 27 can't do everything don't tell it as it thinks it can. Regards, Richard.

Long Shot,

You know me. I'm prejudiced towards the Steyr. But the HK USP and the Sig 229,226, and p2340 are top of the line pistols. You can't go wrong with any of them.

If I didn't have a Steyr, I lean towards Sig since they have excellent 357 Sig/.40 S&W support. HK kind of sucks here.

The USP does have the cool and flexible 9 variations of the safety/decocker lever.

The Steyr isn't as well tested as the others at this point.

good luck in your decision.

My .40's are the Glock 23 and the Sig 229. However, a USP is on my list of things to buy (probably a compact 9mm, though). It's a coin toss. If you're planning on carrying, I'd go with the HK because it's lighter and has the safety.

Sorry I didn't include the pistols intended use in my original post. It will be used for range work & home defense.

I'm leaning towards the fullsize USP or the Steyr M40. I like the cocked and locked or DA first shot option of the USP. I like the compact version as well, but the bbl. being 3.6in, it just seems this pistols a bit to large as compared to a G27, Kahr K40 or Beretta mini cougar for instance. My decision would also be made easier if I could put Sig's trigger pulls on the HK.

The Steyr also has some appealing features, and the grip sits very well in my hand. Only dilemma here is that the pistol has yet to prove itself when compared to other top designs.

Decisions...decisions!

Thanks to all who have replied so far,{long shot}

I ordered a Sig P229 in .40 ?&?. Ran 50rds through a range rental. Accurate, minimal recoil and smooth as silk. Unfortunately I was seduced by a 1911 and changed my order. If you want a .40 don't see how you can go wrong with a Sig.

I own a SDIG229 and a USP Compact and have shot a Walther, Steyer and yesterday an FN.

Go with the USP Compact. Better trigger than the full size and every bit as accurate. The 229 is great but the tolerances are too close and the chamber is NOT fully supported like the H&K. The 40 is a VERY high pressure round. The H&K is made to function when VERY dirty... the SIG is not. The H&K is probably THE strongest production gun in the market... If you don't believe me, ask the SEALs.
The Steyer is groovey but I HATE the trigger... The FN is great but a LONG heavy double action pull... Glunks are not even in the same arena.

I would say the H&K is your BEST choice for a weapon that will always function and also be superbly accurate.

I like the HK USP .40 that I have for sale just fine. It shoots well. I can carry it cocked and locked if I wanted to. From the 40's I've shot, I like the G23 and the HK the best. I think the triggers are about the same as the SIG's I've shot, to include my 226 in 9mm. I do happen to think that the finish on HK is better than SIG.

I talked to an ATF agent yesterday. He said that the .40 has awesome street performance. I don't know. :) I think I'll stick with 9 and 45 personally.

The HK 40 is a mighty fine gun.
Infact - I happily owned one for years before I caught the 1911 bug again.
It NEVER gave me any trouble.
The fellow I sold it too - found the mag springs need replacing.

I have a H&K compact .40 and its one of my favorite guns, BUT the Para Ordnance P-16 Limited with the 16 round mags and 1911 style is the top dog .40 in my safe!
