Walthers is going head to head with Glock

A price war with GLOCK would put Walther in bad financial shape for sure..Glock could drop the price much lower than Walther, and produce a larger supply to capture the market if they wanted ..I think Walther has another reason for cutting thier price, and it has nothing to do with competition..Maybe they know what thier product is really worth..:)

As of right now, Glock has no inventory to ship and they are backordered over 70,000 units. Glock couldn't deliver right now if their lives depended on it. Walther's in no better shape right now. They have no inventory.

Is there a compact on the horizon?
I want a compact, heck I want a compact in 45acp and 10mm.
I may have to settle for a 40 in the interim. :D

I think the price reduction probably has something to do with the fact that the P99 is worth about what a G19 is. Then again, if Walther's inventory is at or near zero, I can't follow the rationale behind lowering their price. Doesn't really make supply/demand sense. The only possible explanation that I can see is that they really geared up for massive recently and expect to have a surplus of pistols in the near future.

Lowering the price and "making it up on volume" is usually a move of the desperate.

This is usually followed by a degradation of quality and service.

I hope this is the exception, time will tell.

Still have not heard if any previously imported (pre-ban) magazines exist for it. Just not very interested in a 10 shot 9mm when it's supposed to hold 15. There may be more out there like me which could account for the price cut.

The information about pre-ban mags has been posted many times. They hold 16 rounds, cost $100-$125, and are available from Earl's, and a few other places.

I own both and would pay the mid 6's again to get the Walther P99.It's a quality pistol. The Glocks are also .40sw and paid mid 4's for them. For the price difference I feel I got what I was looking for.Great news if the price drop holds true lets see what quality standards Walther looses in this process.SAFE-SHOOTING!

How can you drop price on a pistol and not get in a price war? Simply tell Glock it's nothing personal? Dropping price affects everybody selling product that competes in some way. As I stated previously, Glock has a large percentage of the handgun market, so they will be affected. For that matter, so will Ruger. Maybe some people who would normally buy a Ruger will save a little longer to get the Walther instead, since the price differential is much less than it was.

i saw at least 10 P99's at local gunshops this week. will the price drop affect the ones that are on the shelves for $650 . i bet it will be hard to get a local shop to transfer one in off the net for $500

Rodgerdodger, thats one reason price cuts like this are so rare. Dealers get very, very upset when a manufacturer does this. Of course I heard no dealers complain when 1991A1's went from $399 to $550 retail in about a week a few years ago.

Gorthaur, sorry I asked a question that had been asked before on TFL, I'm off to commit ritual hari-kari wish my wife well. I cannot live with the shame I have brought on myself:(

both are good quality guns, i own the p-99 and prefer it...no matter what the price is, i would like to get another p-99. sadly that is not in the current budget.

, but I can assure you that it is entirely reliable, and a gun that I feel I can trust my life to. I have over 2000 rounds through mine, without a single problem at all. Absolutely no tweaking, twiddling or twaddling to make it work. Just feed ammo, and pull trigger... over 2000 times

Thats nice. But I had a Walther P99 in 40 sw that could constantly lock the slide open prior to all the rounds being fired. This plus the extreem muzzle flip made me sell this pistol. Its a second rate handgun compared to glock.

The slide lock open has been fixed.
Extreme muzzle flip compared to a Glock? Not that I have noticed.
The barrel lengths are similiar, the weight is similiar, the Walther's bore axis is only about 1/4" higher, but the P99 has a superior grip. Myself I think the Walther has superior fit and finish when compared to the Glock.
Maybe its a personal problem.

Good, now I can buy one of each.

I would imagine they are just trying to increase their market share. Obviously they are meeting their margins with the new price.
