Walther TPH (.22lr) or NAA Black Widow (.22 Mag)?

Para Bellum

Hi Folks,

my wife want's a new carry gun, which I also could use in low risk, little clothing occasions.
I have narrowed it down to the following two.
Now, what do you think and what are your experiences and preferences?
Please keep in mind that the TPH is slimmer, holds more bullets (6+1) more stress proof (double action) but weaker (.22lr) whereas the Black Widow is stronger (.22 Mag), more of a fumble in stress-situation (single action only) and has less capacity (5 rds drum).

So, what's your pick and why:

I'll alway advocate the simpler approach, and the TPH, being double action, would also be my choice. Small, slim and light, the TPH is very easy to conceal. Have you considered the .25acp, which is centerfire versus the rimfire .22?

the .25 ACP is a little weak. I'd prefer the thinner .22. Centerfire/Rimfire isn't such an advantage with quality ammo, or is it?

Supposedly the reason John Browning invented the .25acp was due to the greater reliability of centerfire cartridges vs rimfire. Not only is primer ignition more reliable in a .25, but feeding as well.

Anyone that says a .25 or .22 is useless, is repeating something he read. They WILL stop an attack, but your shot placement better be darn good.

Before comparing .22LR or .22mag vs. .25acp, make sure both comparisons use barrels of the same length.

Compare the .22lr and .25acp on this site.

In the TPH, there is no difference in the size, weight or capacity of the gun whether .22 or .25, so why not the centerfire .25acp, (just my opinion mind you)?

The .25 TPH generally costs alot more and is harder to find than the .22, so that could be a reason to go .22.

On the link posted above it shows the .25 caliber when loaded with FMJ will reach FBI minimum penetration requirements of 12"+
But when compared to a .22lr shot out of short barreled gun like a derringer it was only achieving 7"-9" of penetration, and then you have the lack of reliability. But using a longer barreled gun like a Walther p22 the penetration is about equal.

But you also gain more grains and a larger bullet with a .25 and more reliability as long as you don't use a cheap gun.
But the .22lr wins for cost of ammo.
.22mag could have an advantage on penetration but with a higher cost and usually in a derringer wich can be odd to handle.

At some point you or her will become disenchanted with them and the Walter will have by far the better trade resale value.

TPH

Walther TPH is a sweet gun, and as stated previously would have a greater resale value. I also carry a Seecamp .32.

I have owned the Black Widow. I was never really that impressed with it, I didn't like having to remove the cylinder to load it and I didn't care for the trigger on it.

I would go with the Walther for that reason. I also prefer semi's over revolvers. The drawback with the Walther is it costs quite a bit more, but as somebody mentioned your resale would be better should you decide you don't like it.

TPH. The three I have owned were all amazingly accurate for their size. They are also very easy to shoot well rapid fire. I can't say either of these things about the mini-revolvers.

My self I say a KelTec in 32 Thats what my wife settled on after doing the 22 up to 357 try outs She carries the 32 thats what important
I have a NAA and its not worth the money The walthers would be my choice after the KelTec but again in 25 not 22

TPH in .22; you/she will practice a lot more with a .22 and pratice is name of the game with a small gun. I have a TPH and it is a great shooter except the first double action shot has a very heavy trigger pull.

...that's why we consider a .22lr or .22Mag. I guess I'll have to learn more about the .25ACP Caliber...

:) That's true, there are several at out shops here. The TPHs cost double of the NAAs...

Thanks. But what and why did you trade them in for?

My self I say a KelTec in 32
Thanks, I'll take a look at that too.

Just to make one thing clear: I carry a Glock 26 24/7 and sometimes a Glock 19. We consider the little gun for my wife who doesn't like the "big" and "heavy" Glock 26 and for myself when we go out dancing etc where even for me the Glock 26 is uncomfortable to conceal (in a 5.11 Holster Shirt...).

...I've checked http://www.brassfetcher.com/ and I like the performance of the .22 Magnum (/22WMR.html) best. At least they penetrate a bit even from a NAA Mini Revolver....

so, I'll bring one more competitor to the scene:
magNEW.jpg

NAA .22 Magnum Mini-Revolver
Specifications:
•Caliber: .22 Magnum
•Capacity: 5
•Material: 17-4 pH stainless steel
•Barrel Length: 1 5/8"
•Overall Length: 5 1/4"
•Overall Height: 2 7/8"
•Width: 7/8"
•Weight: 6.2 oz. unloaded

Sounds rather reasonable and very concealable to me. Penetration counts and the penetration from this is much better than from the little .22lr guns I've found so far...

My wife fired our NAA 22 mag and it flipped out of her hand . She couldn't get a good grip. I fired and I didn't drop but twisted in my hand . I consider these pistols usless I put the 22LR clyinder in and we fire it when we want to miss something :barf: Waste of good gun money

Please buy a pistol that you can draw and fire quickly . If your going to carry for SD . These little SA pistols are not, the answer.
The Walters or a KelTec in 32 will disappear on the body and weights nothing The 32 is relieable and easy to shoot
