Walther P99 single action trigger mode?

Why don't you worry about your carry style, and let me worry about mine?
Well stated!! I believe that I tried to play Handy's role once, but after the flak, settled for a similar viewpoint to yours NMGlocker. Kinda like deciding whether one cartridge is better than another, no one way is better than another. Me, personally? My username says it all (but I also have a G17 and a 1911 around). But I would feel safe with anything else, in any way it is ready, so long as I had trained and practiced it as much as I have with my 990. BTW, I don't feel that an unlocked (safety off) firearm is inherently more dangerous than a locked (safety on) one. Doesn't seem to me like a 1911 will go off unless the trigger is depressed, forget the safety.
IIRC, I think I read that the cavalry wanted the thumb AND grip safeties added to the ".45".

NMGlocker is my username, Walther P99 Military is what I carry.
What I like about the P99 standard trigger, is that it allows me options in my carry mode.
DA, if i'm carrying "Mexican", or in certain IWB holsters.
SA-Forward aka: click, my main carry mode, whether IWB in a good holster or OWB at the range.
SA-Rearward aka: SA, I use this mode for strictly range use, in a quality OWB holster.
SA-Forward is great because its natural for my to get the pistol into this mode. I train to "press check" anytime I belt on a pistol, and the act of press checking sets the P99's trigger to SA-Forward.
I am getting a P99QA on Monday, i'm thinking the QA will be my all purpose P99, its Glock-like trigger, is well suited to carry in a good IWB, or OWB.
A P990 is on the horizon as well, just to fill out the collection.

NMGlocker -

After you get your QA and have a chance to take it to the range, I'd like to hear what you think.

I've only dry-fired them at gun shows and was somewhat impressed...very Glock-like, only better. My next P99 (3rd) may be a QA. FWIW, the P990 trigger feels too heavy for me to shoot well.

I've never fired a Walther P99. I have looked at them in the gun store. Here's my take the first shot is DA with every shot after SA. The only way to get back to DA is to hit the "decocker" button? So if you dry fire (pistol unloaded) the first DA trigger pull. Then load & chamber a rd. The pistol will be in SA? Unless that "decocker" (how do you decock a striker fireed hammerless pistol?) button is pushed the pistol stays in SA. Right? If I star with DA (loaded) shoot to slide lock. Reload the pistol is still in SA unless the "decocker" button is pushed. I don't understand 2 different SA modes. Because this is confusing I would pick the quick action model.

I load up the chamber and fill in the magazine. De-cock the firearm and put it in the holster. DA pull. Works for me.

Catbird,
Many others have tried the 990 and said the same thing. My secret is practice, both with live ammo and an empty pistol. At my last club "fun" pistol shoot, I was one of only a few (2-3?) shooters to clean the first stage of the course. Sadly, I was NOT the fastest, but I wasn't the slowest either, so the system must work after a fashion. But for work past 15yds, don't count on a 990, cuz it will make you work double or triple for 3/4 of the results. Just experience talking! YMMV, of course.

jack_the_sailor: I'll give you a quick rundown on the standard trigger P99, and how the three trigger modes operate.
DA, to get into DA mode, you either decock using the decocker button, or pull the trigger on an EMPTY chamber, the pistol is now in traditional DA/SA mode, first pull DA, all following pulls SA.
SA-Trigger Forward, aka: "Click" Mode, To set the pistol in "click" mode. When loading from slide-lock, the pistol is defaulted to "click", This mode has a long very light pull to a click, once you reach the click, the trigger remains in position, the trigger is now SA for all shots. You can also return to "click" from DA or SA, by simply "press checking", or pulling the slide to the rear 3/4" or so and letting it return forward, this resets the trigger to "click".
SA Trigger Rearward, is standard traditional SA, very short light pull.
When dry-firing the P99, all pulls will be DAO, just like any other traditional DA/SA pistol ie: Sig, Beretta, etc.

One additional thing that can be added to the above description--

I think that the P99 DA/SA version has one of the very shortest trigger-resets I've ever felt. After you fire a round, you only need to allow the trigger to return about 1/4" (my guesstimate) until you feel the trigger reset to a short, light, SA position which allows you to fire another round. I have intentions of measuring this reset distance, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

People that do not own a P99, must think we are crazy "long SA, short SA, Click SA, not click SA, ..."
I will add to NMG's post.
Here is my discriptions of the various action of the P99:

DA=Chamber the first cartridge and use the decocker to decock the striker, or the trigger has been pulled(in practice or a misfire) With either, the trigger is now true DA.

SA withthe trigger in a forward position= Any time the slide moves forward and your finger is not on the trigger. This will cause the striker to be in a "cocked position"(SA), but the trigger will be in a forward position(looks like the trigger is in a DA postion.) To fire the first shot, the trigger must be pulled to the rear. The first .5 inch of trigger travel is around a 2lb pull, then there is a "click." At this point the trigger becomes slightly harder to pull. Then after another .5 inch of pull, the trigger will come to a very crisp release stage and the striker will drop. Now if you were shooting, the slide would cycle. With good shooting habits, you finger will still have the trigger fully depressed when the slide returns to battery (follow through.) Now to fire the weapon, ease tension on the trigger and let it move about .1 inch forward and the trigger will reset and you can now pull the trigger again(firing the weapon in SA.) If the weapon is locked open and slide is released, the trigger will be in the forward position because (hopefully) your finger is not on the trigger holding it to the rear.

SA with the trigger in the rear position=Pull the slide to the rear and let it go back into battery. The trigger will be in the forward single action postion. Now pull the trigger to the rear about .5 inch until you feel the "click." Now let go of the trigger and the trigger will remain in the rear position. To fire the weapon, the trigger now just has to move to the rear .5 inch and will go through the crisp release of the striker. If you have preset the trigger to the rear position and want to have it back in the forward position, pull the slide .5 inch to the rear and let it go back into battery. The trigger will reset to the forward position.

Regular DA is good enough for me. I am absolutely in lov ewith the P99's decocker/trigger operation, and IMHO its the gun Glcok should have made. BUT, I dont like the idea of pulling the trigger on a loaded round (to set the Short SA). The only time I ever use the short SA, it sometimes when I'm just plinking at the range. Even then, with the weapon pointed downrange, It feels very strange and dangerous to pull the trigger (just for the first click) when you DONT want the gun to go off. I can just imagine how it would feel to set the trigger in your home before carrying the gun in that mode.
