Walther P99 "Quick Action"

While it is true that Walther makes the lower half of the SW99 for S&W, it is a custom part for them and is not identical to the P99. And S&W makes their own slides and I think, barrels for the SW99.

One question leads to another...what is the difference in the Walther "custom frame" and the P-99 frame? How different can the slide and barrels be? Tree Rat.

Here is something interesting that I found just the other day when checking the Walther site.

Walther-USA
2100 Roosevelt Avenue
Springfield, MA 01102-2208
800-372-6454 Fax: 413-747-3682

It would seem that not only does Walther allow/license S&W to mate their top end to a Walther frame but they (Walther) use the same address as S&W here in the US.

The new NJ State Police pistol will be a SW99 but it actually will be a P990 slick slide (no decocker) with the QA feature in 9mm. This was to satisfy the specs written by NJSP to favor a Glock pistol action.

They are getting 3200 weapons at a cost of $1.3 million.

Since I started, I'll add as much as I can without referring to the source articles.

I think the differences between the P99 and the SW99 frames are largely cosmetic, like in the type of checkering, the shape of the trigger guard, and the magazine well. The slide is definitely more rounded on top on the SW99 than the angled sides of the P99. I don't know if the slides and barrels are interchangable, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were.

After some further consideration, it would also not surprise me if the barrel and slides between the P99 and the SW99 were made specifically not to interchange. I have a feeling the respective manufacturers might want it that way to avoid confusion and other potential problems.

Regarding the NJSP guns. If they are SW99 set up in the P990 configuration, they will operate exactly like the Glock. If they have the QA(Quick Action) they are entirely differnt from the P990. The QA feature partially tensions the striker. It's like your Glock not having the first part of travel where it brings the striker to tension, instead the QA is at the point where the Glock is ready to drop the trigger. It's pretty wild. I carry a Glock 17 for duty, but just picked up a P99QA .40Auto for occasional duty usage and off-duty carry. I find this is the sweetest .40 cal(Glock 23,22,27 SIG P229, S&W 4006)I have ever shot, and subsequently put my two-month old P229 up for sale.

PS No flames about the SIG, it was a great gun, but it's one or the other, and I find the Walther much more of a joy to carry and shoot.

Okay I just checked out pics from both web sites. Both the lowers and the slides are contoured mildly different, except for the trigger guards which are significantly different. Design, features and function are no doubt identical. Humpman's right. Still weird marketing to me. Anybody want a SW99 in .40S&W, check out my add in Firearm sales. Don't have a problem with the gun as it relates to this thread. Just looking to get another gun. Tree Rat.
