Walther P5 ?

Wild,
My carry pistol is the P99. I shoot sub 2in groups at 25yds. The DA first shot, while not of that level of accuracy, cannot be called a "flyer" by any means. It is interesting that in the P99 owners manual it says that the DA shot is for getting a round off when fine accuracy is not the most inportant concern!!! It gives the impression that they do not have faith in their own creation!!!! The P99 trigger is probably why I am having so much trouble with my P5!!! I'm spoiled!!!!!:D

The P5 is a member of the triumvirate of pistols designed for the German police pistol trials of the 1970s, and the three contenders are the finest single-stack 9mm pistols ever made anywhere: the Walther P5, the HK P7PSP, and the SIG P225.

Of those three, I'd have a hard time picking a favorite. All of these pistols are excellent choices, and I usually have at least one of the trio in my arsenal. My favorite of the lineup is the P225, but the P5 does everything the P225 does, equally well. If I could get one at that price, I'd grab it. Plus, you can stump the yokels at the range with the funky left-side ejection pattern.

Thanks Izzy, but...

Is the P5 fussy? I'm fairly sold on the P99 as my next gun, but thanks to the folks on this site, I'm wondering now if I should go with a P5 instead. -- And any second opinions on +P in the P5? This will be a carry gun.

I went ahead and bought the P5 (and did not trade the P229--I won't tell you what I traded). I'm going take it out and shoot it tomorrow. I don't have a big selection of 9 mm, but I will see if anything I have will choke it.

The Walther (as are all German-made 9x19s) are made to fire NATO ball which is equivalent to Amerian 124 +P. Plus P's should not be a problem.

If it shoots as well as I hope it does (it points well/feels good in the hand), I will probably carry one of the +P 124 HPs in it--I'm leaning toward the Remington Golden Sabre or Gold Dots from Speer, ProLoad or Georgia Arms.

Juliet,
Do NOT use Gold Dots, or any of the clones!!! The bullet is to long. It will jam your pistol!!!! I have direct experience with this, both in the P5, and the P99!!! I repeat. Do Not use Gold Dots!!!!!

Thanks Denfoote. I guess, it'll probably be Golden Sabres then (if they work--I never carry anything until I run several magazines-full of every magazine through the pistol--it gets expensive, but I don't want have to use any of my high-dollar insurance if I can avoid it).

I was sort of leaning toward the Proload because I have found it very high quality ammunition at a semi-reasonable price or the Georgia Arms because it is the most affordable carry ammo out there (you can even afford to practice with carry ammo occassionally).

Denfoote -

I took it out and shot it today. I didn't have a big selection 9 mm stuff, but it fed everything I put in like champ including Speer 124 grain Gold Dots, Federal Classic 147 JHP, and various FMJ including some American Eagle 147 flatpoints I had.

I was very impressed. Most of shooting was double taps starting with the pistol uncocked--very smooth first DA and smooth DA/SA transition. More than enough accuracy (though I didn't really get serious--this was just fun, get acquainted, see what works, etc.). Now, if I could just buy me a couple of extra magazines without having to spend $160 plus S/H.

My experiance was with Corbons, they did not feed reliably, Hydroshoks did, Ball Ammo did. I got a ramp job and mag lip polish on it but had to sell it quick before I could go out shooting again with Corbons. I did not think about any bullet being too long, and neither did the smith.

I wish I had sold something else ( Hey at least it was a good cause)...

Juliet,
Good for you!! Maybe I got a bad lot. My advice for your mag hunt is to haunt gun shows!!! Be sure that you don't get P38 mags!!! They are not interchangable. P38 mags do not have the little slot at the bottom. Mec-Gar used to make aftermarket mags for the P5, but I am not sure if they still do.
