Walther P22 Problems !!!!

I just bought the P22 for my wife as a gift and of course I had to test it out first to make sure everything was OK :D

It wasn't OK! In fact IT SUCKED! :barf: I cleaned and lubed the gun before I went out to the range and bought some Federal 40 gr copper jacketed hallow points on my way there.

Here are the results:
200 rounds fired
38 FTF (many times the slide would return but with no round in the chamber)
35 FTE (mostlty stove pipes but some were just stuck in the barrel)

At first I thought it would get better after I shot it some more (1st two magazines FTF and FTE EVERY TIME)
The accuracy was terrible. It may have been the ammo but I never heard too many bad things about Federal.

I'm going to buy some different ammo this week and try it out again, but I don't mind saying that I think that I may have gotten a lemon.

In My Opinion

IMO, it sounds as if the slide is shortstroking due to a brand new strong recoil spring. Break the gun in with higher velocity ammo would be my suggestion, but again, this is just IMO.

I would do what hksigwalther said first before you get too mad. Mine did the same thing with the red box American Eagle stuff. I think it's only 38 grains. Anyway, with the high velocity and target loads, the P22 works great! And you'll be amazed at how accurate it is with the target loads. I'd like to put the scope that they offer on mine to see what it can really do, because those "combat" sights that the P22 has won't give you really good results. I do fairly well, just because I'm used to the same type of sights that are on my P99.

When I was talking about P22 problems at the local shop they said the barrel nut needs lock-tite. They said this cured all the feed/jam problems.

Walther needs to fire its research and development crew. IMO neither the P99 or P22 had all of the bugs worked out before they were on the market. Both guns often need this or that replaced, tweaked, or an ammo change to work reliably. I used to be a big Walther fan, my opinion of them is now quite soured:mad:. I know many folks have Walther pistols that havent been anything but perfect, but theres too many people who havent had the same luck, myself included.

.22 autos are notorious for being finicky about ammo. I have a buckmark that will malfunction once or twice per magazine (in the exact fashion which you describe) if I use American Eagle or Remington. But if I use CCI (which is a bit hotter) then it is very reliable.

What happens is that the ammo doesn't generate sufficient pressure to force the slide back hard enough.

p22

I've had my Walther for 3 weeks. I've put 500 rounds of thunder bolt with the regular barrel nut and 700 rounds of rem. subsonic with a suppressor. I can't make it Jam. The Walter P22 is a Incredible weapon with and without suppressor.

The pic is with a SWR 22 suppressor.

My P22 jams a lot too. One clip is better than the other and the Thunderbolts work the best so far. Haven't found a hollowpoint that it will feed yet.

The barrel nut is coming loose always and I will try the lock tight.

My daughter's p22 5" had problems on the first mag or two, but in the brick of remington standard velocity since then it is 100%.

Great gun, no problems (sights are kind of ok) and it is quite accurate.

I was having fun with it shooting clay pigeons at 70 yrds. I did not hit them every time but several per magazine or enough to keep it fun.

Keep after it, it really is a pretty good gun afterall.

Well, I"ll have to second all the comments on the P22 and it's malfunctions - it sucked today when I took it out :(

Shooting my 3.5" barrel version today, with Walmart, Federal 36gr High Velocity bulk pack copper plated stuff. Out of about 9 or 10 magazines full, I think I was able to get through ONE magazine without a failure-to-feed, failure-to-extract, or double feed.

I was quite disappointed in it's behaviour. Accuracy was not that great either. Granted, I wasn't benchresting it, but offhand at about 25ft, it was spraying all over the paper!

I will be shooting the 5" barrel sometime this week at an indoor range to see if I fare better. I'll also try some different ammo.

Meanwhile, my SW22S with 5.5" Bull Barrel, once I got the sights adjusted (new barrel), was quite accurate if I did my part, and no malfunctions whatsoever.

My P-22 has been flawless after about 300 rounds or so. It has fed, fired and ejected everything from the 550 round Wal-Mart Federal packs to CCI Stingers with no problems. I bought the target barrel from Walther USA but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Give it a chance as it is a pretty fun little gun. It is accurate and a great tool to train new shooters as the controls and features are in line with what a full-sized combat auto has for the most part.

Of course YMMV.

Try the new .22 Velocitor ammo from CCI. That should have enough grunt to cycle even the most stuborn .22 auto. Heck... It could cycle some bolt actions too! ;) Kidding... but it is made of some stern stuff.

I have a really "cute" Bryco Arms .380 that I'd almost be willing to give you. My girlfriend says it's the only gun that she'd consider shooting. It's the only gun that I'm scared to shoot! I reckon I'm gonna weld some treble hooks on it and take it fishing.

I thought I'll post an update on my P22. I bought some Winchesters and had better luck. Out of 100 rounds I had 4 FTF. I then tried my Federal, and I had similar results as last time, just not as bad. I had about 2 FTF on each magazine (shot 200 rounds) but no FTE.

I guess this may be an ammo problem but it doesn't make me any happier about all the problem is gunis having. I'm going to finish off this brick of Federal ammo and try some others. If I get no improvements, I'll call Walther (SW).

Thanks for all your posts.

walther P22

I have one that has been fed nothing but CCI Stingers, It has functioned flawlessly.
It does have a pretty cool fire ball though.:D

I've gone through about 300 rounds of WW 40gr and CCI Stingers in mine, both 5" and 3.4" barrels. No failures, three different mags. I like it. Maybe I'm just lucky.
