Walther P-22?!?

Has anybody bought one of these tactical squirrel killers? I am just curious. It looks sooooo cute, yet so absolutely useless at the same time!

I haven't even seen one yet!! I tried to order one, but my FFL said they were not in the country yet!! Of course, this was some time ago. I keep checking the case everytime I go in, but no P-22!!! :(

I picked up a P22 target last week. Very very stiff out of the box, but a good lube job and cleaning and it is quite smooth. I have not shot it yet (bad weather) but I think it will be ok. I picked it up for my daughter to learn on. I think the smaller grip frame will be good for a youngster.

Had mine since January. Bought with the 5" barrel. Just got the 3.42" barrel from Earls. Like Peter M. Eick says, clean and lube it well, including the mags. I also agree with Jeff OTMG, it's not a PP, but at $269 vs. $800 plus, it shouldn't be.

Be careful if you swap out the front sight. Those little suckers take off when you pop them out.:D

Overall, I'm very satisfied with it. DA trigger pull stacks up pretty fast at the end of the stroke, but SA is ok. I expect both to improve over time. It's cool.

I've been looking into one of these bad boys from the start. Seems like a great price point, and good Walther reliability. However, recently I was at a dealer and he said they no longer stock them. Seems all of the ones they sold got returned with broken firing pins, jams, and the like.
Don't get me wrong. I still want one, but maybe Walther and S&W just have a few kinks to work out.
You gotta love how small it is. I hope they make a P99 compact that small. That would be great.

Got one today. Just couldn't resist. To the range tomorrow.
The best part of it all is that my wife said, "Can I go with you to shoot it"? "You most certainly can, my dear"

Anyone else notice there's a lot of frame rail wear in the back? I've put over 600 rounds through mine and notice the paint is wearing through even when there was a lot of lube back there. Granted it's only paint now but what about over the long term?

Also, how long will the slide last with the wear I've noticed along the slide, where the slide release rides up when the mag is empty. Seems like very soft metal to be getting scraped so early.

The sights could use some improvement. I have the target model and the compensator up front likes to twist when the set screw is tightened so the sight goes off to one side. My rear sight is off from horizontal too.

I took mine apart yesterday and used the magnet test. I could not seem to find any significant part that was not magnetic, which means it is likely to be steel. Does anyone know what parts are the Zinc castings refered to above?

Nope. But I'm going to use your test and check for myself.;)

On the compensator, as long as it goes to the same place every time, it should be okay. If it's so far off that the rear sight can't be adjusted, I'd send the barrel set back to get it fixed, ot take it to a good gunsmith who can tweak the recess for the setscrew without screwing up the barrel sleeve.

Regarding the rear sight, that is odd, but has the same solution as the compensator issue. Have you tried running the rear sight through it's range of adjustment and rechecking, or is it off at the base?

Sorry guys, the zinc comment was mine. Check with Earl, he knows more about these things than anyone. I thought the slide felt like a zinc or pot metal casting, but did not put a magnet to it.

Am I the only...?

Am I the only one that thinks this pistol and its big brother the Walther P99 are the ugliest pistols currently made? Regards, Richard

Peter M. Eick.

Heck, I haven't checked it yet. I'm hitting the range this am, and I'll investigate when I clean it. I'm planning on putting a box of Stingers through it with the short barrel, for a function check (but mostly for fun).

I figured to shoot it while waiting for the monster-killer to cool between shots.:D

My brother bought a P22 when they first arrived here in Canada last January. They are only available with the "target" barrel, as the shorter barrel is prohibited here, being less than 105mm in length.
It's a nice pistol to shoot, it's a bit fussy about the ammo you feed it, and we encountered one serious problem with it.....the roll pin that goes through the slide just under the thumb safety kept walking out the left side of the gun, jamming the safety, and jamming the gun. This put me off buying a new P99....
It is not a target pistol by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not as accurate as my Ruger MkII standard. But it certainly is cute. (Tactical Squirrel Killer.....I like that :D )

the issue of the loose front sight/compensator can be fixed easily. DON'T try to tighten the screw behind the front sight! it only locks the "comp" onto yje barrel sleeve. you need to remove it and retighten the barrel end nut with the tool provided. when it comes loos the whole barrel assy, and sleeve comes loose too. i tightened it back down, and used just a touch nail polish. it doesnt require taking anything to it to remove the nut if needed. and will keep the barrel nut in place.
i have been able to ring a 4x6 steel plate out at 50yds consistently with the target p22. will be ordering in the shorter barrel here soon.
only issue i had was with one of the mags. the feed lips needed to be spread out a little more to function.

I put 250 rnds down my daughters 5" target version today (she is only 20 months, so I do not think she will mind). A few failures to feed in the first 50 rounds but after then 100% reliable. Reasonably accurate, with no other problems. After a good greasing prior to going to the range, I found the SA stroke to be pretty darn clean. The DA stroke smoothed up after about 10 times, so I think it will get better with time. I was able to hit clay pigeons at 75 yards about 2 times out of ten. Not bad overall.

All in all I would rate it a fun little pop gun. I think it needs more then 2 mags though.

One last comment, I see the problem with the roll pin. Mine moved over to the edge, but did not start protruding. What size pin do I to get to replace it? Anyone know?
