walmart ammo "#2s"

I stopped by my local gun store, I was amazed at the price of their ammo being a considerable amount more then of wally worlds. When I asked about the price difference, then man explained that all of Wal-Mart's ammo are seconds and that they only sell first choice ammo. So my question is what makes a cartridge a first or second choice, what does that mean for not only the way it shoots but also how it will affect my firearms and safty.

Im throwing the BS flag on that one.

Walmart buys ammo by the freight train load. Not just a cpl cases at a time. This allows them to buy at MUCH cheaper prices then your LGS could even dream about.

Thats why Wallyworld has lower prices

Not true. -- And I HATE WalMart. So, it hurts me to admit that something negative about the company is not true.

You may find, however, than quality standards are a little lower on 'budget' ammunition from certain retailers that are big enough to have large contracts with the manufacturers..... ;)

I can't speak to current production, but I can tell you about the "way things used to be" at Federal Cartridge in the Twin Cities. A very good friend used to keep me supplied with ammo when he worked there....it ways always "seconds" and I never had a problem with any of it. They sold the seconds to employees and the supply was always sufficient, that he could get all he wanted. Seconds were never put out for public sale. They did make ammo for other brands and even then it was NEVER seconds. I'd call and ask him about today's situation, but he's no longer with us.

Do you really believe that an ammo company is going to say "opps this stuff we just ran is substandard. Lets just sell it to Walmart". No multi million dollar company is going to risk a lawsuit selling bad ammo. And Walmart, another multi million dollar company is not going to risk a lawsuit selling substandard ammo. The exposure for both companies is to huge for the small profit.

Frankly, I would find another dealer to deal with. I have never liked anyone who promotes themselves by telling me how bad the competition is. You are being shopped and lied to.

What is "seconds" ammo? Would any manufacturer sell defective ammo knowing there are millions of hungry lawyers out there?

Just to play the "devil's advocate", it may not be seconds, but it may be made to a Walmart "standard" that is "different" than the gun shop's supply. Next time anyone visits Walmart, take a look at weed trimmers for example, and pick out a name brand. Box, trimmer and number look almost identical as the trimmers at your "mom & pop" lawn & garden stores, but if you record the numbers and compare, you will find a slight difference, with a feature or two different or not on one of the trimmers.

I don't know if Walmart would go as far as have their own run of ammo, and I don't know how much they could save by using a different spec, but it is something to consider. Again, I'm just tossing this out as a possibility.

With production lines running non-stop 24/7, you really think they are going to retool to make a cheaper version for walmart? Clothing, yes, ammo, no. ALL makers make several layers of quality from price point specials to high end match-grade and everything in between. Walmart is going to carry what sells; and in today's market, it is the stuff they can sell a lot of quickly and turn it over.

Thanks for all the info, and by the way I wasn't really buying the seconds bull crap. I only mainly go there cause it's the only place I can find .22 ammo, I only enquired about his ammo while I was there.

Wait. What?

A gunshop employee told a lie?!?!!!!?

I'm stunned and amazed.

:D:D:D

I put on my high boots when I go into a LGS. They'll say anything and they seem to think we're really, really stupid.

Sort of insulting, really.

Totally agree that the shop is straight-up lying about Wal-Mart only carrying "seconds." However, some of the posted info on exactly what consitutes "seconds" isn't entirely true either.

CCI has absolutely packaged and sold "factory seconds" in the past and I have bought it and loved it.

Other companies offer this stuff as well. Both Nosler and Sierra offer factory seconds of their bullets. There are often some fantastic deals for products dubbed "factory seconds" and furthermore-- you could make a darned good case for argument that a "factory second" ammunition product from 10 years ago was of higher quality across the board than most of the base ammo that has been shipped since the [election] of 2008.

WWB for example... that stuff has never been worse than it is right now.

They look like this:

Factory seconds does not mean bad ammo but usually some type of cosmetic blemish. I bought a case of those 22's for $6 for 200 and have had zero issues so far.

Jim

Edit: Argh! Sevens beat me to it.

The ammo just like the guns in Wal-Mart are no different than the ones in your LGS. Just usually priced better.

That's the kind fo BS you get at gun shows. A guy at a table selling over priced ammo told me they were seconds, so it must be true.

"No, dont go to Wal-Mart, I hear they get bad ammo, thats why it's cheaper there! Yuck yuck, Here's your receipt sir. That comes out to $80 for 525 Rounds of Remington Golden Bullets, would you like to pay ten cents extra for a bag?"

9/10 LGS's are priced extremely Too high on everything they sell. If you find one that's good, you'll know it most of the time, by looking at their costs for stuff.

Some seen locally:

9.99+tax for 20 rounds of TulAmmo .223
$35.99+tax for 20 rounds Winchester Soft Point 7.62x54R (White Box)
$49.99 +tax for 500 Rounds Federal Champion .22LR.
$67+tax for 100 Rounds of Independence 5.56

Stuff like this makes me wonder why these stay in business like they do.

Yeah, heard that, tires, batteries, lawnmowers, blow driers, cell phones yada, yada, yada, all seconds. Even the rifles when they go on sale.
What crap. I wouldn't do business with a liar.

Nailed it.

Do a search on "Consumer Guide" or "Consumer Reports" and you will learn the answer. Yes Walmart buys in huge quantities and because of that is able to spec out exactly what they want in their inventory, as well as price. Items are not second, but supplied per Walmart's specifications.
