johnbt,
Both...Mad..as in angry as hell that the government wouldn't leave him alone...but his ultimate response was Mad, as in insane.
If he wanted to live in a tar paper hut...I don't believe that anyone has the right to tell him how he has to live (as long as he is harming no one else).
I don't know much about his backfilling operation, but I guess that to rebuild his land he would have to start by dumping fill into the water that exists where solid land did once. Makes sense. But as government is, and has been, the largest single polluter of our land and water, it is highly hypocritical for them to prosecute him for doing what they are guilty of as well.
The problem as I have read is not WHAT he was doing, but that he was doing it without a permit. Word has it though, that he recieve a permit in 1985 and that when he reapplied for the permit in 1995 the state had "lost" it.
Curious about where you got the idea that Drega had C-4 on his property. I spent a good deal of time in the net today searching for "Carl Drega". I found my sites about Vin's book. Quite a few pro-freedom/anti government sites that either quoted the book or offered their own take on the Drega situation. And lastly, I found quite a few sites that spoke of Drega as the nut job that he was, but without explaining the various actions that led him to that point.
Anyway, even the most vociferious anti Drega individuals had nothing to say about C-4 being found on his property. Ammonium Nitrate, other "bomb making materials", but no C-4.
