found that snapping the filters off of a couple of Marlboro and stuffing them in my ears works pretty well.

I have used 9mm cartridges stuck in my ear canals. Looks stupid, works fine. .38spcl might work for you...you'll have them with you in your revolver if nothing else.

I'll sometimes take a shot at a destructive varmint with a rifle without hearing protection, but I wouldn't do it with a handgun unless I felt I had to. It just isn't worth it.
