Various handgun "niches"....

My "reasons" provided to the little lady for more 1911s (a large and ever growing collection) have been as follows:

I don't have an all stainless one.
This one has a 4" or 6" barrel my others are 5", 4.25", 3.5" and 3"
I don't have a .38 SPL WC one or a 460 Rowland one or a 50 GI one
This one has an ramped barrel
This one is a double stack
This one was make in 1918

and there have been others :D

Other than findings "reasons" to give the wifey; I don't have categories based on purpose.

My categories are:
DA wheelies
SA Wheelies
1911s
all other pistols that are not 1911s,
rifles,
and shotguns

Niches? we don'tg need no stinking niches!
For me, the only niches are make, model, caliber, and barrel length!

Ok, sons of niches would be scoped, adjustable, fixed sight

:DThats Funny No matter Who you are!!:D

...and True For Me.

For example, when I am going out to dinner (and will be home early) in a "nice" neighborhood, concealment is especially important and I usually carry either my Ruger SP-101 or my Kahr K-4044. However, on the rare occasion when I have to go into a not-so-nice area late at night, I will normally carry a Kimber or Springfield 1911-A1, a Ruger GP-100, or a Smith N Frame (often a 610-3 in 10mm, a 627 Special Edition in .357 magnum, or a 625-9 in .45 Colt). When, on a long Interstate drive, capacity may be paramount, I am likely to carry a Sig P-226/.40 S&W, a CZ-75B/9x19mm, or a Glock 23/.40 S&W.

Yeah, when I go out in a nice area, I carry ... nothing.
When I go out into a not so nice area, I carry ... nothing.
When I go across country I carry ... nothing.

See how simple life is living in Wisconsin ? (where only criminals are allowed to concealed carry). Grrrrrr

I have no nitch for guns, just what I want and what I want it to do. When (IF??) we ever get CC option, then I may have to get a thinner lighter gun to carry.

Oh boy.... now you've done it

General CCW
On Duty Carry
BUG
Small Game Hunting
Medium Game Hunting
Large Game Hunting
Super Tiny CCW / Formal Wear CCW
Corner Store 3am Milk Run
Open Carry (soon coming to FL)
BBQ Gun
Gerenal HD
Long Distance Travel / Airport Gun
Truck Gun
Kayak Gun
SHTF / Hurricane, Loan to Family Gun
Hiking / Camping / Woods Gun

And so much more...... All I ned is another one in the collection and I'll create a reason for me owning it.

AWWWW. come on Miami...

dont group em all together... split em up... (ya can get more that way)

SHTF
Hurricane
Loan to Family Gun
Hiking
Camping
Woods Gun
.
... you could have gotten six guns...and you grouped em into only three:p

If you need to justify the purchase that much, maybe it's not needed after all. ;) Personally, I care little what it's specifically for in most cases. Sure there's a few purchased early on for this or that (hunting, plinking, target shooting) but once the few bases are covered you simply buy what appeals both visually and functionally. Can currently hunt anything I'll ever have a chance to and then some and cover any likely target/range uses. Have also covered about all specialty niches - one remains that that/s likely to get taken care of this yr.

I have handguns that fill these niches (there's some overlap):

Summer CCW
Winter CCW
Backup/Reserve CCW
House Gun
Open Carry Gun
Kit Gun
.22 Plinker

...but not to fill these niches:

Hunting Gun
Target Gun
Big Plinker
"Stash" Gun
Lightweight CCW
High-Capacity Gun (hate using the term, but it fits)
Handoff Gun (it'd have to be something I'm willing to part with, so I don't have one)

I'd like to have two guns for every role... if I ever win the lottery. Oddly enough I like long guns better than handguns but there are more and more different kinds of handguns on my wish list. Maybe because they're individually less versatile? Gawd I hope I can find a girl who's into guns and trains, 'cause I'm sure never gonna have any money left over for jewelry and shoes!

1. Guns I like.
2. Guns I really like.
3. Guns I really really like.

That covers about every gun out there. :D

--Wag--

One gun for daily ccw
One gun for daily ccw for the wife
One for more formal occasions or anytime clothes restrict the options (shorts etc.)

One to shoot instead of my CCW primary to keep the milage low on the ccw.

Rifles
One for target shooting,
One for CQB in case of zombies
One for that reach out and touch a deer, ox or moose
One for the wife for beer

Shotguns
One for kids
One for birds
Ond sluggun for deer

I am shortly adding a pistol for very large zombies, bear (backup) and generally large game. (460 Rowland)

Looking for a 308 carbine for future zombie needs

I'm gonna have far fewer niches than handguns. In reality no one has more than about 3 handgun niches that should be filled.

Small game and plinkin gun.
Fullsize hunting/HD gun.
CC gun. (If ya can't CC than toss this one out leaving you with 2 niches to fill)

Now some would argue that you can't fill all these niches with one gun. I can tell you right now if I had deep pockets for ammo I could. But for obvious cost reasons an accurate .22LR should be in everyone's locker. Full size hunting and HD gun? Take your pick of about any fullsize handgun, semi or revolver, in .357 or better. CC gun? You can carry a 4" revovler or a fullsize semi for CC so you really don't need a different gun but for the sake of arguing with your wife let's get something. Might be a NAA .22 or a .38 S&W or one of those ugly plastic compacts. Whatever. Now if ya are married you can double that but those are not YOUR niches but hers.

Anything above that is gravy. Dang I like gravy!!!

Collectible guns that go up in value

I would agree with the categories previously named for utilitarian guns that are used for shooting, but nobody has emphasized collectible guns that are likely to go up in value over 10 years or so. I am talking about guns that are considered classic, in excellent condition, are out of production and not intended to be shot much if at all. These are safe queens for fondling carefully.

I have dabbled over the years in two categories like this. First it was Colt Gold Cups in the late 1990s, which were made in a variety of series, finishes, calibers, etc. They could be bought at that time in the $600 to $700 range. I bought and kept a number of them in unfired condition, and now they seem to be worth $1200 to $1600, depending on specifics.

In recent years I decided that Smith & Wesson prelock snubbies in various frame sizes were another promising category that might appreciate over time, and have bought a number of them in the $400 to $600 range. My hope is that they will be in the $1000 range in 10 years.
