USS Tempest

George Hill

Staff Alumnus
Old sea faring sailing ships with dozens of cannons are very cool.
Turns out I have one in my family history.
A Sailor in my bloodline served aboard the USS Tempest during the revolutionary war.

Uh - problem...
I can't find anything about that ship!
Anyone have anything about the USS Tempest?
(NOT the 334 Ton Coastal Patrol Boat)

George, thanks.
I went into dogpile and found umpteen jillion Tempest related sites, not one what we were lookin for.

Did find a historical aircraft site that made the whole thing worthwhile for me.

Sorry, I won, you lose. Will keep eye out tho.

Sam....unlike a train, I'm easily sidetracked.

Try this, I don't know if it is there or not. Look on the left-hand side below Navy History. http://www.multied.com/revolt/

I/m trying to find information on
The ship Tempest
The only thing I can find out about it is;
USS Tempest, PC2, homeport Little Creek, Va, FPO AE 09588-1961 (I don't know
what these things refer to.
In 1780 during the Revolutionary War, an armed vessel, in James River
below Richmond. The ship was captured by the British, then under the command
of Arnolds & Phillips. (information taken from a Rev. War Pension Application)
Men under the command of Capt.Charles Little, were marched to Richmond,
Va, where they were put under command of Ensign James Deneal and sent on board
the ship Tempest. The men were engaged in a battle while on board and were
taken prisioners.

Can anyone help me with this?]

DJ is this what you were wanting? www.-personal.umich.edu/~edsnyder/Tempest/

I did find this for you George. Are we looking for a Revolutionary War era vessel?
quote:
April 27, the British met with firm resistance on the part of the Virginia navy on the James River; the most important of these vessels were the ships Tempest and Renown of sixteen guns each and the fourteen-gun brigantine Jefferson.[/quote]
From: home.earthlink.net/~patriot1/nav16.html That quote comes about 3/4ths of the way down the page.
