Beautiful,, man this is THE Elk cartridge,,,;) I just finished loading a some test loads for my 7mm rem mag. They are 160 grn Accubonds, with various load weights of H4831 SC,, the one that shoots the tightest will "live" and be further tested.

Use good bullets,(like Wyosmith said) that stay together,,, NICE PICK FOR ELK!!!!:);)

Radom that isn't necessarily the case, you can spend as much on premium .308 caliber bullets as fast as I can the 7mm,,,, I can also make the 7mm shoot flatter, faster and and and,.........:o

Lots of good answers here, all of them Yep. Elk can't be that tough to kill, I've known guys that hunt them with pointy sticks (bow and arrow), but rifle hunters say that the 7mm magnum is a fine elk cartridge.

Pointy sticks with broadheads have it all over bullets where cutting capacity is concerned, as long as there isn't a lot of bone in the way.

Short answer, yes.

Longer answer. I think any of the 7mm or 300 mags are about a close to perfect elk rounds as you can get, but there have probably been more killed with the 30-06 and 270 than all the magnums combined. Most any cartridge from 7-08 and up would work. It depends on how much recoil you are willing to tolerate, and how far you have the skills to shoot accurately enough to cleanly kill an elk. As others have said even an arrow will cleanly kill an elk, but the 7mm and 300 mags will do it at longer ranges.

Go to the "Hunt" thread here and search for "elk"...

there was a NICE article form early this summer from the Colorado DNR regarding elk cartridges, find and READ it.

Passed it on to two gent I know in WA, one of which is a WA MASTER Hunter, and he was going to incorporate it, into a hunting training seminar this past fall.

I'm presently working up loads for a M70 7mmMAG, using the Hornsdy 162gr SST bullets.

Do have couple of .308 winchesters, but though upgrading to 7mm was proper.

I have never shot at an elk, and don't pretend to add expertise here. However I would think it would be very FUN to take one of the Marlin XLR 338 rifles out to shoot one. (The 7mm Rem question being answered already.):D
