JAKARTA, Indonesia —
Indonesia's Supreme Court sentenced nine men, including Chinese, French and Dutch nationals, to death Tuesday for producing millions of pills of the illegal recreational drug Ecstasy.

The punishment for the foreigners was harsher than that rendered by a lower court last year which had ordered the execution of just the two alleged Indonesian ringleaders.

The Dutch and French governments promptly reiterated their opposition to the death penalty, but had no specific reaction to the Indonesian case because they had not yet been informed directly.

"The Supreme Court considers the Frenchman and Dutchman experts," Supreme Court spokesman Djoko Sarwoko told The Associated Press. "If we let them be, they would be able to produce in another place, or teach others their skills. This is a threat to the next generation."

Five Chinese defendants funded the operation, he said, while two Indonesian men had run the day-to-day manufacturing operation.

In November, the Tangerang District Court handed down life sentences to Serge Areski Atloui of France and Dick Nicolaas of the Netherlands. Five Chinese men each got 20 years and an Indonesian security guard 10.

Nancy Yuliana, the defense lawyer for Nicolaas, said she and her client had not yet been informed of the latest decision.

The factory in Banten province, 60 miles west of Jakarta, was capable of producing 300,000 Ecstasy tablets per week, prosecutors said. An estimated $142 million worth of Ecstasy, methamphetamines, ketamine and chemical ingredients were seized by the police from the plant, among the largest discovered in Indonesia.

Capital punishment is common for serious drug offenders in the predominantly Muslim and socially conservative nation of more than 234 million people.

At the end of 2006, there were 37 foreigners on death row, most of them on drug charges, including six Australians convicted of heroin smuggling. Another 22 foreigners were serving life sentences.

The nine men have one last legal option to contest Tuesday's Supreme Court ruling, the so-called judicial review, but new evidence must be produced. They can also seek a presidential pardon.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Denis Simonneau said: "We are opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances, regardless of the country."

In the Netherlands, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Dadou said if the decision is confirmed "we will again make clear to the Indonesian authorities our objection in principle to capital punishment, and push to have the sentence commuted to life in prison."

Ecstasy is popular in Indonesia and criminal gangs also have taken advantage of the country's poor law enforcement and rampant corruption to produce the drug for export.

According to documents about the factory raid, various laboratory components arrived in Indonesia in May 2005 and were set up in an abandoned warehouse in a four-acre compound a month later.

Within weeks, law enforcement agents identified large quantities of ketamine in the African country of Malawi, which then passed by ship through China and Singapore before arriving in Indonesia disguised as soy beans.

Better yet stop telling people what they can and can't do with their own bodies. Eliminate the money going into the black market and you eliminate the criminal suppliers. When you can buy a bag of pot along with a 5th of jack you'll see a lot of crime drop.

You win the War on (people who use certain types of) Drugs by not fighting it in the first place.

However, this doesn't increase the size or power of government, that's why we have the "WOD" in the first place.

Poison the supply of heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. User beware. Soon the users will be gone and problem solved. All addictive personalities gone....world a much better place.

Except of course for people addicted to the three most prevalent drugs in America: alcohol, tobacco and caffiene. But yeah, that's a great idea. Poison people who have done absolutely nothing to you before they commit crimes. Hey while we're at it let's sabotage all ammunition so those evil gun owners blow their hands up before they kill some innocent kid.

Yes kill someone for making something that's essentially harmless (MDMA), I'm sure that will solve the problem.

Guess where the meth producers went when they cracked down on it here? They went and made super-labs in mexico. There will always be people willing to make drugs as long as drugs remain illegal, there is too much money involved for people to stop doing it.

Poisoning the users? It shouldn't be any of the governments business what people put in their own bodies.

Tell me why pot, ecstasy, LSD and mushrooms should be illegal when they do pretty much no harm to the user or society?

Well, the drug pros wouldn't like the Chinese People's Republic's method of combatting drugs. First offense, some jail and rehabilitation. Second offense, same only longer, Third offense....BANG to the back of the head.

But of course we have to remember long ago when the British kept opium the going thing for the Chinese and millions of lives were squandered smoking that crap and drifting along in the pipe dreams. Although the Brits conveniently have short memories, the Chinese do not.

I think most people in the US have forgotten that the British also sold jet fuel to the North Koreans during the "Police Action" while they under the flag of the UN were there helping fight NK and China.......just a thought.

Sort of like how the death penalty stops everyone from committing crimes that fall under the category of punishable by death...

Well said.

Guys I manage a pawn shop and have seen first hand the difference between alcohol abuse and abuse of the cracks and meths type drugs. I have yet to see an alcoholic rip the gold from their mouths. I have yet to read about alcoholics killing their mothers for a few bucks for more booze. I have seen what happens to a friend when he trys to resist taking 2 mg of a methadone type drug. He starts to feel hot and sweat begins to pour from his body. He feels sick and weak.....light headed. His body cramps. This from 1/4 the full dose as he has weened himself down painfully and over much time. The differences between pot and alcohol compared to the hard core drugs is night and day.

Ah, the true colors of an anti-drug warrior. It's perfectly okay to kill anyone taking "hard" drugs? Wow, your moral system sounds great.

I too can speak from experience here, and I have seen many lives ruined and entire families destroyed by alcohol. Entire generations of families destroyed by alcohol. bet plenty of people reading this have too. Booze kills more people per year than ALL illegal drugs combined. Sorry, your example does not fly nor is it supported by the data. When booze was illegal, you saw illegal activity surrounding booze (shooting, crime, robberies, speak easy, etc, etc) and once made legal, it was cheap and easy to get, thus you don’t generally have to rip out your gold teeth. Thus, drug laws do more harm than the drugs themselves, and I have known many a drug user, some of whom died and some of whom lived.
