US Deploying 7 carrier Battle Groups

Other carriers involved in the exercise include the USS John F. Kennedy, the USS John S. Stennis, and the USS Ronald Reagan - which left Norfolk on Thursday.

Why where the Stenis, kennedy, and the Reagan in Norfolk? That's a little far from home. I think if these 3 ships where in Norfolk and then left, WAVY news would'nt have to report it it would be on CNN.
Hardball,... You are from CA how do you get WAVY news 10?
This is seven of the Navy's 13 active attack carriers.

U.S. Only has a 12 carrier fleet.
This story has a few flaws. JMAO

This is from the official US Navy Website.

"Ships Underway"

USS Enterprise (CVN 65) - Atlantic Ocean
USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) - Atlantic Ocean
USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) - Pacific Ocean
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) - Pacific Ocean
USS George Washington (CVN 73) - Arabian Gulf
USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) - Pacific Ocean
USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) - Atlantic Ocean
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) - South Atlantic Ocean

According to that, there are only 8 carriers at sea, and they are widely scattered.

The Reagan is homeported in Norfolk.

The Stennis is homeported in San Diego, and according to the Navy, is in the Pacific.

The Kennedy is homeported in Mayport, Florida, and has just put out for a 6-month deployment to the Atlantic/Mediterranean.

And as far as I can tell, the United States has 12 active aircraft carriers...

Reagan
Truman
Stennis
Washington
Lincoln
Roosevelt
Vinson
Eisenhower
Nimitz
Enterprise
Kennedy
Kittyhawk

Oh yeah, the last of the improved Nimitz class carriers has been named.

CVN-76, the George H.W. Bush

We're gonna have a William Jefferson Clinton. I just know we are...

The Reagan is homeported in Norfolk

FFSC San Diego
USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76)
HOMEPORT CHANGE INFORMATION

Welcome to the RONALD REAGAN’S Homeport Change Information page. The Ship will be officially changing homeport from Norfolk, VA to San Diego, CA July 2004. The ship will be starting the transit around the horn sometime in May 2004.

Just figured i'd share.

USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) - Atlantic Ocean

This amuses me. I assume the CVN, means nuclear powered carrier, where CV means conventional power. We still have conventional carriers at see? Wow. Thus tax cuts really hurt us didnt they :)

Loch

Gabe,

That explains why the Reagan is listed as being in the South Atlantic.

Lochaber,

We still have two conventional carriers in the fleet, the Kennedy and the Kittyhawk.

Oh, and here's the Navy's announcement on the "major exercise" these choads were talking about.

It's a multinational wargaming scenario.

Cripes, who was providing this station its information?
