Served the bulk (and best part) of my enlistment as an Airborne Pathfinder in Germany from 1984-1987. We were a 15 man detatchment serving the aviation assets of the entire 7th Corps. Whatever we wanted, in the form of air support, firearms training, etc. was ours for the asking. Superb duty.
Made over 100 parachute jumps, earned the German and Belgian para wings, left as a Sargeant, Jumpmaster, and Master Parachutist.

Those were the days.

Allen_Raiford:
Is 7th Corps Aviation still at Echterdingen Army Airfield just south of Stuttgart?
Also, did you ever jump at that 4 man drop zone in Bad Tolz? In the 1950's this DZ was used by the 10th Special Forces.

BTW...dont EVER jump thru your apex. :D

Take care. :)

Spent the first 4 years in 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, and my last 4 years at the 1st Cavalry Division, Horse Cavalry Detachment. You wanna talk about a fun assignment!

I wore the green suit from 1983 to 1992, some Regular Army, some National Guard. Started off as an 11B10, then re-upped for 95B school and moved up to 95B40. I did the Persian Excursion in 1991 with 14 MP BDE as a platoon sergeant and platoon leader.

I declined to re-up in November 1992 after the election. Figure it out for yourself; I still can't write about it.

Those years were the best I ever had, or ever expect to have.

Dorgunr,
At the time of my enlistment, 7th Corps Aviation assets were concentrated in the 11th Aviation Group. As you may be aware, this unit was with the 1st Cav in Vietnam.
My unit was officially assigned to Headquarters Company, 11th Avn gp, as were the Vietnam era Pathfinders.
After I left, the 11th Avn Gp was re-designated the 11th Avn Brigade. This unit served as 7th Corps aviation assets in the Gulf War, and I am sad to report, their were members of my old Pathfinder detatchment killed over there.
After the Gulf War, the 7th Corps was de-activated, but the corp aviation assets, in the form of the 11th Avn Regiment were re-assigned to 5th Corps, and are in Bavaria somewhere. The Pathfinders disappeared along with 7th Corps.
I landed in the DZ you describe, but never jumped in it. We worked with the 10th SFG on many occasions, as well as the Ranger detatchment that was also at Bad Tolz.
I am sure you could tell some hairy stories of being a doorgunner. I fired the M60d from a Blackhawk a few time. It was a blast. Of course, no one was shooting back at me ;)

Spent 4 years as a 16P Chapparal "it flies it dies" Attached to a Light Infanty Division (7th) so I guess you could say I have spent a fair amount of time as an 11B straight leg type too. We trained for our mission and in our spare time theirs too.

spent 2 1/3 in the reserves as a 98J Deception type "now you see me now you don't"

Hardest two things about being a civilian. Not getting to shoot a .50 every few months the comfort provided by knowing that with a simple click of a handset I can make it rain steel.

NE Asia War Games, Class of '54. Tie. Occupation duty with the 50th AAA Bn...Then, typewriter jockey in HQ US EUCOM in Paris for two years. :) :) :)

Having entirely the wrong attitude for further military service, I re-achieved professional civilian status--which is just above a five-star general.

19E and 19K here. Armor crewman on the M60 and M1 Abrams tanks. The Big Red One, 3rd ACR, and 7th Inf. were a few of my running spots. I don't miss it.
