Urgent question re 629's

May I suggest this one?

I bought a Performance Center V-Comp revolver like the one at the link below about a year ago. I did have a gunsmith do a trigger job before I even picked it up, but the single action trigger pull is incredible. The double action is a little heavy, but very smooth and I asked that he error on the side of dependability. The gun fits my hand much better than my Ruger Redhawk (nice, accurate gun, but not in same class as to handling - though to be fair not gunsmithed and half the cost). Both shoot incredibly well. About two weeks ago, we were shooting chicken eggs against a dirt bank with the Redhawk. I could do the same with the Smith within my first dozen shots. It is absolutely now my favorite revolver. Think these were a special run for RSR Distributers. Local gunshop has one just like it for $800.

FWIW: It is the only S&W product I've bought new since the infamous agreement and only did that after I heard the company had been sold. Also FWIW, I have a S&W .22 pistol 422? that is a piece of junk. Very lightweight. Feels fairly nice. Jams all the time and not very accurate for me.

44 magnum Comp 5 Performance Center

Edge:
I had the opportunity to fire that revolver but found that it was too light and the recoil more punishing than with my Classic DX 6.5 inch 44 magnum using full house handloads or factory ammo. I fire about 100 rounds with my Classic DX every weekend and thoroughly enjoy it. I like and own several PC handguns but declined to purchase the 629 Comp 5 inch.
I would appreciate your comments
Herb;)

Herb: I like it. It looks like your 6.5" DX weighs about 49.5 oz. That is 5.5 oz heavier than the 44 oz for my 5" PC V comp and 5.5. oz lighter than the 54 oz for my 7.5" Redhawk. The balance just feels significantly better for me with this particular gun than any other large bore revolver I've tried, but that is very subjective. I have smaller hands and carry more than shoot. I'm not immune from recoil and routinely mix in snap caps to make sure I'm not flinching, but I haven't found its recoil abusive. I'm not shooting as much as you are though either. I keep saying I'm going to take more time for the fun stuff, but not sure when I will. :( Your DX is a very good gun. I bet with that much practice, you are good with it too. :) Edge (Jeff)

I've shot just over 12,000 through four of my S&W 44 Magnums over the last three years. Not firebreathers! Just cast bullet reloads.

Three of the guns, all from the Performance Center, had to be returned for repairs. The front of the cylinders were being "eaten" off. Apparently this happens if the barrels aren't properly installed. These guns were, probably, made just as the last owners was about to go bankrupt. Smith is repairing them gratis.

Isn't the current version of the 29 the 29-8?

Kenneth: That doesn't sound good at all. Pretty certain that mine was made after new owners. Now I'm wondering how to find out for certain... Jeff

629

EDGE:
I am very partial to the S&W. I have owned the Ruger Redhawk, Superredhawk, Blackhawk, Desert Eagle, Thompson Contender, Freedom Arms single action. Every week when I go the safe out comes the S&W 6.5 inch 629. I have an original set of wood S&W Combat grips that are no longer manufactured that are worth more to me than the actual gun (ie I can always buy a 629 but cannot get those particular grips). Anyway enjoy your 629 Comp. I have not ruled out the possibility

627-4 comp- from performance ctr.

Guys i know this is a little out from what you are discussing, but this is basically the same gun isnt it. I saw a 627-4 in 38 super looked like new, is used, stainless, with black 8 shot cylinder, has the Muscelic grips, red white and blue, trigger was smooth as butter, not sure if want the 38 super thought. Could u guys give me a little info on this gun, and what might be a good price for it, also what i should be getting with it, moon clipt etc. any infor would be greatly appreciated
Jerry

Jerry: I don't know a fair price for that gun, but I bet one of the other forumites does.

Update: I had a chance to do some shooting today. Shot my 7.5" Ruger Redhawk, my 5" S&W PC V comp, and a 6.5" S&W 629 (not a Classic DX). The ammo I was shooting was a hot loaded 240 Grain JHP (practicing for deer season).
I did the best shooting with the Redhawk. Second best with the 5" S&W. Worst with the 6.5" S&W. Felt recoil in order of least to most was in the same order as shooting results. The square butt stocks on that 6.5" S&W made it the least fun by a large margin. Trigger pull is in the exact opposite order. The trigger for the 6.5 S&W was probably a little too light for safety and had obviously been worked on as it was incredibly light and smooth. The pull on the 5" S&W was just about as light as I care to go and I had had had it worked on. The Ruger had the worst trigger and hadn't been worked on. I was thinking about selling the Ruger. Now I'm thinking about having its trigger smoothed a bit and taking it deer hunting instead of the V-Comp. I bought the Ruger used for $300 and am seriously considering taking it deer hunting instead of a gun that I paid over 3x that amount for (including trigger job).

After reading this thread, I hope I didn't make a mistake yesterday by being high bidder on a GunBroker auction for a 629 V-Comp with 4" barrel. It has had 100 rds and no blemishes except for a light cylinder rotation ring. The recoil issue has me concerned. I guess I can just put .44 specials through it.

BTW, I paid $685, which is probably not a bad price, but what do you guys think?

Rock Jock: My V comp is still my favorite revolver. I think the 4" would be even handier. The V comp is a fairly heavy gun for its size so I don't see how its recoil could be as much as the Mountain Gun which seems pretty popular. I like the grip shape and the V Comp was far more comfortable in recoil for me than a longer barreled 629 with square butt stocks that I shot. That other 629 had a great trigger, but needs different stocks. I think you will like it. I just need to do some more practicing. Jeff
