Unloading Single Action Guns

go with SirWilliam's advice

As for empties sticking in rough chambers in a Vaquero, I did the same kind of procedure with my .357 Vaqueros and they're slick as greased snot now. The empties shuck out easy and fast, just gotta get the case started with a fast jab of the ejector rod.

As for the Vaquero's indexing, it's just one of those little things you may have to live with. Can't rely on the audible "click" to tell you the chamber is lined up like you can with the Colt design. Gotta visually align the cylinder.

OTOH, Power Custom (I'm pretty sure that's who it is) has some parts kits that allow your Vaquero to function more like the colt, with 4 clicks, a free-spin pawl, half-cock loading, and the cylinder chamber aligning with the frame window on the audible click.
Never seemed worth the money to me personally though. I just look as I load/unload cause my targets aren't shooting back.

For someone who have won competitions, considering the amount of shooting done in practice, you would think something as simple as a unloading technique would be child's play even if you have to make a little modification.

" I had to use the extractor every time. was this wrong??"

No, this is the way the guns are designed to be used.

Hey Magic

Cut me some slack will ya, that was over 40 years ago. Do you own a Vaquero? Did you read what Ruger had to say about the cylinders not lining up correctly? All I'm saying is I don't want a defective gun that causes me unnecessary work. ??? Your snide remark was noted, and nothing is simple at age 70!

My Stampede is a better S/A. Unlike the Vaquero, It lines up perfectly, and the empties drop at my feet. It's a keeper. My Vaquero is history...My last word on the matter. Thanks to everyone for the help. I hope the information that I posted will be helpful to other Old Vaquero owners as well...

I don't have a Vaquero, but I do have several Bisleys which are SBHs with a different grip frame and trigger. All 3 including the Blackhawk and the Single Six operate the same way. We are just trying to tell you your Vaquero is not defective. It works exactly like it was designed.
Your Stampede more of a clone of the Colt SAA than a copy of the Ruger. Most shooters prefer the handling of the Colt, but buy the Ruger for it's strength and durability. Unless you plan on shooting heavy loads, which by the way the new Vaquero is not rated for them like the old models, why not get another clone of the SAA or if the money is right get the original. You will probably be much happier since that's what you were used to shooting.
The USFA Rodeo is an excellent example that's a true copy of the Colt at a reasonable price for it's quality. They also have much nicer models with higher price tags.
