University students urged to carry guns.

I stand pretty squarely split on this. I do think carrying a firearm is a personal right and I should have the ability to protect myself and a fighting chance. On the other side, I think it's misleading to suggest that the solution to spree killers and terrorism is simply to open up the areas where people can be armed and let the problem fix itself. Obviously we still get killers opening fire where they know they are going to be killed at some point or another. Universities are gun free zones, and I resent mine for that, but an area with lots of students and a high population density is likely to be a target whether it's known to be defenseless or not.

I also second the ignorance in the emphasis on the Muslims in the example. We have a pretty good record of spree killers, both ideologically motivated and apparently motivated by random acts of aggression. To narrow it down to one is short-sighted and seems to make it a statement tailored to riding on current media narrative.

Since when does being unarmed make you defenseless? And the idea of a bunch of nineteen year-old kids handling firearms is a little scary. Your idea may be different.

My mother-in-law is from Lynchburg. I can barely understand her English. Her parents worked at the other well-known school in Lynchburg, the religious one.

I lived in Lynchburg and had no problem understanding the people who lived there at all. I lived in Northern Virginia for 6 years and had problems understanding half the people who lived there. A Virginia native is rare in Northern Virginia. I have lived all over Virginia in my 68 years on this earth and living in Northern Virginia was like living in a combination of a Northeastern city and a foreign country.

Why are you talking about 19 year old kids? Concealed carry on campus or anywhere else in Virginia is restricted to permit holders that have to be at least 21 years old.

Pretty ignorant statement by Falwell...

Quote:
"I always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walk in and kill," he said.

I don't think it's an ignorant statement in light of the latest shooting. First, these quotes were cherry picked by CNN - not know for unbiased reporting. Regardless, focus in on what he actually said: "before they walk in and kill" That is the point of carrying a weapon isn't it? End the threat before the threat ends you and/or others. And, given the Paris attack, the San Bernardino and a number of others, the reference to "Muslims" is not really out of line here. Perhaps he should have broadened it out a bit and included others who would take innocent lives, since there is also some history of simply deranged individuals shooting it up for no apparent reason; but the reference is relevant given recent events.

On the comment about conceal carry being a privilege. Unfortunately, it is. I don't think it should be, but the fact is that it is a privilege. Most states I know of require that you get a permit or license (permit=permission=privilege) to carry concealed.

I think it would not matter if Trump was referring to Muslim terrorists or run-of-the-mill American crazies, the media would be saying exactly the same thing they are saying now.

No media bias. Falwell stated what he stated in the manner that he stated it. Whether he meant something else or not is irrelevant given his delivery and how it was received by the overwhelming majority of people. You can find most or all of his speech on Youtube.
