I seriously doubt anyone will be held accountable. Unfortunately, if we look at the reality of ultra-competitive political campaigns, fraud does play a role in the overall strategy for both parties; so IMHO, voter fraud will not be taken seriously anytime soon. Since Democrats have much more to lose in stamping out voter fraud, it is very, very unlikely that any Democrat will make fraudulent votes an issue; and certainly not to the point of mandatory lengthy prison sentences for those voters and/or election officials caught in the act.
I know this is off topic a little, but remember some of the strategy talking points during the 2004 presidential election. The evil genius Karl Rove with his "People of Faith vs. the Democrats" angle on the 2004 election. The Democratic Party became the party of the Hollywood elite. Well, it's really been that way for quite a while now, but Mr. Rove and Republican strategists drove the point home time and time again. This leg of the Republican strategy was not fraud, but it worked much better than fraud! The Bible thumpers came out of the woodwork in Ohio and the Democrats lost states they had no business losing. It seems the older I get, the more interesting politics becomes. Having said all this, as an ex-Democrat turned Republican, I wouldn't put it past Republicans to engage in a little thievery when an election gets really close. When an election is as close as the one in Washington, the party with the most fraudulent votes wins. Once the recounts begin, Democrats in Washington, and apparently elsewhere are much better at "finding" and "enhancing" ballots than Republicans. If Republicans want to win really close elections, they're going to have to get better at that.
