Ultra-mag lunacy at Remington

I remember when Rem introduced the 6.5mm and 350 Short Magnums in the '60s, IIRC. The downfall of those, besides the fact that the guns were as ugly as homemade sin, was the fact that the short 308 length action precluded handloading any decent bullet weights. Too much protrusion into the powder space.

Have they remedied this shortcoming in the new Ultra Mags?

rugerfreak, my son has a Browning Stalker in .300WSM. It shoots .5 inch at 100 yds, when I can hold it that steady. :D

I really like this gun, it is light, doesn't kick nearly as bad as I thought it would and it shoots great. Now to head to elk country with it.

Hi, Wild Romanian,

You sort of contradict your own argument. First you say that that ammo will burn out a barrel in 1000 rounds. Then you say that the average hunter fires only a few rounds a year. Assuming both statements to be true, and if the hunter fires 20 rounds a year, his rifle will last 50 years, or (effectively) his lifetime. So what's the problem?

I think there is a function and a place in the world for the big magnums, but probably not for the occasional hunter/shooter. As has been pointed out, the average hunter likely won't wear out a barrel in 50 years, so it should give the person a functional weapon for their adult lifetime. Sort of like buying a sports car-not all that much utility, but they are fun:) Its no free lunch with a big powder burner-with the hunting I do in the Texas hill country, I could probably give up my 308 and go to a 223 single shot!

Seems everbody that doesn't want a magnum is happy to tell the rest of us why we shouldn't want one either. Sounds like the same old anti SUV drivel to me.

I bought a 300 RUM in 1999 and its the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. I bought it for shooting a country mile and it does just that. Whatever is on the receiving end doesn't get back up.

I'm keeping an eye out. I may eventually get one of the Ultra Mags for big bear or African dangerous game. I'm a ballsy little chap, but I don't think I'll go for Cape Buffalo with an '06 until I'm ready to retire. Permanently.

So maybe the UM's weren't made for the "average hunter"?
