Although I carried a 1911 in my Navy days I own and voted for the H&K USP 45. I have the full size version and couldn't be more satisfied, 100% reliable, hits what I point it at, and can smack the target 10 times if I need to. It might not have the exotic wood handle or the classic lines of the 1911, but it does have a certain rugged combat look that I like.

G21 at 13+1 and G30 at 10+1 are my favorites....but, I'll be honest, it is very hard to vote against the 1911...until just recently, I have always had one in my "arsenal" since the early 70's...an American icon.

I haven't met a 1911 yet that didn't need some kind of tinkering out of the box in order to make it work right. Now before you deciples Saint John jump on me, I have to go with what I know. The animal might exist, but I ain't seen it!!!!:D
I stayed with my tried, true Glock 30:cool:

M1911 types in .45 ACP

because I carried one for years in the Marine Corps during a 20 year career and have carried one for 16 years as a detective. All have been .45 ACP and as to why .45 ACP. A Texas Ranger was ask once why he carried a colt 45, he answered because they don't make a 46.

No problem, I like my Glock 21 it "takes a beating but keeps on ticking".

A 1911 is like an newly restored classic car, it needs special attention for it to function flawlessly, it needs the match parts to make it shoot 1" groups at 25yds, gotta keep wiping it with silicone cloth to keep the finish nice and shiny... In other words, owning a finely-tuned 1911 - you have to be ritualistic about everything - replacing the Shok Buff every 1000rds. and the recoil spring every 3000-4000 rds and sometimes you have to take your stock 1911 to a mechanic (gunsmith) for a complete rebuild and when you get it back and hold it for the first time, feeling the exotic wood grips on your palm... Well, its almost as good as sex :D

I believe something like this fits the bill...
