U.S. Navy ship rammed, four sailors killed.

Does anyone have a good idea of how much explosive it would take to blow a 20 by 40 foot hole in a 0.5" steel hull? I'm surprised that the hole was so large, seeing how the bomb could not have been attached to the hull when it detonated.

One thing, among several that I'm curuious about is the following with regard to he bombed destroyer.

Going back to WW11, the navy had the capability for refuling and reprovisioning at sea, on the move.

Given that this particular area has been at least somewhat unstable did this ship "have" to refuel in this particular port, at this particular time?

Has the navy forgotten how do do that which it did well enough 50 plus years ago, or doesn't it have, due to Clinton's Cuts, fleet oilers anymore. I find myself curious as to which it might be. Anyone have a handle on this, a good handle that is?

The terrorists blew the ship for several reasons.
1. the tv coverage, to get the press and the world more aware of the problems in the middle east.
2. For the arabs own propaganda value-- See,
the Americans arn't so tough; we just blew up on of their navy ships and Gore/Clinton responded by pushing yet another gun contol law on law abiding American gun owners but did nothing to the terrorists.
3. to raise the price of oil. Bleed the filthy American's until their pockets are
empty.

Dangus mentioned something about "The one good thing....getting ethanol into main stream use in America and reducing foriegn
dependence on oil ."
I agree with the sentiment Dangus, but electric hybrid cars are the way to go.
Ethanol eats out most neopreme gaskets and diaphrams currently used in carbs and fuel injector systems and generally requires that the carb/injector system in question be rebuilt to withstand ethonal , which is more expensive than gasoline and a less eficient fuel. In simple language, less miles per gal at more cost.

Toyota makes the 1999 and 2000 Priesus and gas /electric hybred (special order, about 18,000.oo) which is a 4 dr sedan with trunk,
at,ps,pb, seats 5,and gets 65mpg city and
55 mpg highway with 95mph top speed.

Electric powered from 0 to 25 mph and starting the 24 valve lean burn 4 cyl gasoline engine automatically at 26mph.
The gas engine remains running until you stop for a traffic light, at which time the computer shuts off the gas engine and restart on green light is via electric until 26mph. Batteries are rechargable d cells,
a brick of 144 of them ,under the rear seat and recharge automatically from the altinator when the gasoline engine is running.

This car has all the advantages of gas engine but would half America's usage of gasoline, especially for city drivers.

I got a bit off subject here, so Ill end my post.

Matt, it would not take much explosive. A 500 lb charge in a WW2 torpedo will blow a destroyer in half. This is not .5 inch of armor steel, it's .5 inch of mild steel.

Alan, Clinton cut the funding for the deployment of Oilers for refueling in the area last year. Thats why we're having to go into port to refuel now.

That destroyer only has .5 inch of armor????? That's pretty weak.
