Had collected Arisakas for 30 odd years. Some drill rifles were cast receivers, some were bad type 38's that were marked accordingly. I have been auctioning off my Japanese stuff for the past year, and sold two of the type 38's mentioned and one cast drill rifle. The cast "Last ditch" rifles were exactly that. I never owned one, but did see one once. They were a totally different design and were designed for war use. They are extremely rare because even the importers threw them out. The common "Last ditch" rifles were shabby and cheap and even the barrels were made of a lower grade steel. I never heard of any problems with firing them, but the Korean made ones really look scary. I would think more than twice before firing one of them.
