I will be flamed, but I need to weigh in on this.
I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty. First, there are significant practical flaws in the system. Numerous innocents have already been executed and death row inmates are often exonerated. The justice system is far from perfect. Executing an innocent person can never be undone. The death penalty is not a deterent to violent crime. It is often more expensive to execute a prisoner than it is to keep him/her in jail for life.
But practical reasons aside, there is an overriding moral reason that the death penalty is incorrect.
It is true that the crimes that death row inmates have committed certainly deserve death. Those who willfully kill, rape, and kidnap do not deserve to draw breath. They deserve nothing but a slow, painful death. A quick lethal injection is too good for them.
However, I submit that neither the state government nor society at large has the authority to execute that prisoner. No one on earth has.
No death row inmate presents a threat to the public at large. They aren't leaving jail. Executing them does not protect the public. Executions serve only to satisfy our need for vengence. We may say that "justice is served." But is it, really, if even one innocent person was executed?
This all being said, I would not hesitate to use deadly force in self defence. I would shed no tears for anyone who was killed while committing a violent crime.
Any thoughts?
Humbly, P
