Two Year Old Shoots Woman at Wal-Mart

The two year old could have just as easily shot their self. This mother was very, very careless and paid a price for it. Too bad.

and her concealed gun fired

grabbed a small caliber handgun, which discharged one time

Both quotes are from the linked article. Have you noticed that most articles use this kind of vague language that blames the gun and not the person? It's always the gun just went off and not that someone pulled the trigger. In this case the child grabbed the gun and accidentally pulled the trigger sadly killing the gun owner. Just a peeve of mine.

Wow. Lots of stuff I'd like to say about this but since someone died it would be tremendously inappropriate so I'll refrain.

I'm not that religious but FWIW, prayers go out.

There is nothing inappropriate about the truth... she was grossly careless.

We hear about this kind of thing happening over and over again... kid gets ahold of a gun or a ccw goes off in a pocket, etc.. when are people going to learn that a gun on the move MUST be in a holster??

Carrying without a holster is just plain neglegent. So is leaving a gun around the house where a kid can get to it.

The only thing I will say is . With Firearm ownership comes the responsibility to make good decisions and even a small decision can be life changing for ones self and everyone around them .

Reading a article on Yahoo News indicated that the gun was carried in a Conceal Carry purse. A Christmas present at that. So would that make the purse a proper holster?

Also from the same article:

"The shooting also plays into a simmering US debate over gun storage laws. The Centers for Disease Control counted 857 unintentional firearm deaths in 2011 involving kids younger than 14. Fewer than 20 states make it a crime to fail to store guns safely around children."

I thought that CDC wasn't suppose to be collecting gun death data?

That just sounds like typical "cause of death" data.

They aren't (or weren't) supposed to be spending money to research guns in any way

That funding was just restored

Never.
Purses are a terrible place to carry a gun for a long list of reasons:
They're often lost. Left lying around the house, or on the roof of the car.
Cant feel someone else messing with it.
Its not 100% under the owners control 100% of the time.
The CCW purses have zipper pouches, but they're not kid-proof.
The ladies often switch them around, carry one today, carry another tomorrow.
They will always be a place of intrigue for a child. Obviously.

A purse is a convenience tool for women, a place to keep their personal items.
Carrying a gun is never convenient, nor should it be, it should be slightly uncomfortable regularly reminding you its there and that your responsible for its care and security.

This lady's family is trying to paint her as responsible, not careless, etc... at the end of the day she let her kid get a hold of her gun, out in public, where anyone could have been shot.

+1 on dashunde, and it's a thing that bothers me as well because I have a wife who time and time again I tell purse carry isn't worth a !@#$ and still I see her drop that pistol in her purse and go. This wife of mine is most definitely a creature of convenience of there ever was one, but I can't control what she does which really sucks on a thing like this.

When Anne Richards (Gov. of Texas) was opposing concealed carry, she stated:

Richards replied, "Well, I'm not a sexist, but there is not a woman in this state who could find a gun in her handbag, much less a lipstick."

My wife wants to carry. I just bought a G42 or she may carry my PT709. One thing is for sure, she won't be toting anything until I'm satisfied she can perform all gun safety skills without thinking about it. {so to speak}

And she certainly won't be keeping it in her purse\handbag. Holsters for the Glock just came in the mail yesterday.

I live in Pa where no LTCF class is required. Doesn't really matter, she'll need to pass MY course! And it certainly isn't some 1 day trip....lol.

I would like to learn more about this case. Many mothers will tell you two year
olds have a hard time holding a cup or a spoon or a plate. I recall the first time I fired a Glock, I thought I had left the safety on because the trigger would not budge, then I realized it HAS no safety.

Never.
Purses are a terrible place to carry a gun for a long list of reasons:
Purses specifically designed for concealed carry have seperate, easily accessable compartments only for the firearm.

I agree they aren't the best place to carry, but the reality is that is the only way many women WILL carry a firearm due to the way they dress

It can be done correctly

I set up my mothers purse. She has one dedicated pocket and a retention holster is fastened into the purse with two special bolts like I use to fasten holsters in my coats. Only three things are in this dedicated pocket. Her S&W .38 Airweight in the holster and two speed loaders. She caries the purse with the one inch wide nylon strap around her neck and shoulder bandoler style with the bag hanging down in front if her covered by her arm.

She does not remover her purse for anything as it is set up so she does not have to.
