You should have sat down and called. If they only went thirty yards and landed they weren't spooked too badly. The clucking you heard was one tying to find the others. That turkey may have very well been hunkered down in the brush right in front of you when you were looking for it out in the open field. Very seldom....and I mean very seldom will you ever just walk up to a turkey after spooking it. But sitting down and making assembly type calls is what brings spooked turkeys back.....sometimes. If nothing else it may get them to reveal their location or themselves.
