Turkey hunting with a rifle?

I've hunted turkey with a bow and shotguns in the past but, I've really had the inclination to use my .17 HMR. Anybody else ever use a small caliber rifle for turkey hunting? Cant hardly wait for the season to get here. Only 4 more weeks here in Idaho.

Sounds like fun!

I had a Pro-Engineer class instructor show me a big belt buckle he was wearing turkey hunting in Texas. It had a deep round dent in the middle of it from a .22 Magnum.

Seems turkey hunters get pretty invisible all camo'd up,but a little movement attracts attention.

No rain on your parade, have fun.

I have killed a few turkeys in PA with my .243, rifles are legal there in the fall season.

Got a big gobbler with a 70 grain Ballistic Tip at 3450 FPS MV, he weighed a bit less dead than live weight, but was still a lot of eating on him. I shot a hen with same load, clipped her neck, did not ruin any meat.

Not legal to use rifles here neitrher. I guess if you are good enough shot to hit it in the head or neck, the .17 would be fine.

I killed a turkey recently with the 17 Mach 2 and a V-max. The bullet make a neat little hole in the breast and exploded in the boiler room. Very effective and no meat loss.

Illegal in Arkansas.
Very dangerous thing to do.
Turkey hunters dress up to become near invisible then pretend to sound like a turkey.
Sadly, there are many 'turkeys' out there who have no hesitation to take "sound shots".

Thats all I use, a Remington 700 BDL Var, in 223 using FMJ bullets, works good.

My Granddaughter has turkey hunting with a rifle down pat;

I have read that the .22WMR is a favorite among many turkey hunters who live in states where it is legal. I believe the article was talking about either Texas or New Mexico but, just like Scout said, they shoot them in the breast and no meat loss. I would think the .17HMR would do just as well as the .22WMR. Also illegal in Georgia. Shotgun only.

It's illegal here in Ohio, but I've always wondered why I can't use a .22lr, a good rifle with premium ammo can do head shots all day long from 100 yards or less.

If it were legal here, I'd see about working up a load with some of those 115 gr FMJ's they make for the 6.8 SPC in my .270 WIN ......

Here in CA it's legal to hunt them with an air rifle as long as it's .20 cal and above and above 12 ft lbs. LOTS of them the last couple of years too.
