Trying to find MY pistol

All my life I've owned rifles and shotguns. Up until a few years ago, I never owned a pistol. The first one I bought was a CZ-75. Since then I've owned or still own other CZs, Taurus, S&W, Ruger, Sig, HK, and EAA pistols. Some I liked more than others. Most I kept, some I got rid of because I just didn't like them. Point is, I still haven't found MY pistol. The one a would always grab. My "go to" gun so to say. Well the other day I was in my fun shop and they had an XD in .40. Loved it. Felt perfect in my hand, like the ergos and balance. Well I don't shoot .40 and am not looking to add another caliber so I had him order me an XD in 9mm. I think this might finally be MY pistol. Wish me luck! Any thoughts on the XD9?

It's not a Glock

My buddy's got one in .45acp. I've shot it. It's ok. Everyone will chime in and agree that it's a great pistol on a budget, and it has Springfield quality backing it up.

But you shouldn't give a crap what anyone else says. You bought a pistol that feels right to you and has fulfilled that last nitche you needed in your collection. Kudos, and happy shooting

I haven't shot one, but it's got a good reputation.

YOUR pistol will be the one that feels like you were born with it in your hand. That you are accurate with. That's totally reliable.

Hope that's the one.

I'm a Glock person, but there are a number of folks out there whose hands just aren't Glock-shaped. The Springfield XD is a solid, reliable performer and is a pleasure to shoot. You made a great choice.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not a glock hater, you can't argue with their record, but glocks just don't fit me. I shot several that my friends own and just didn't like the way they felt. Out of all the pistols I've held or fired, the XD really did just feel right. Not a revolver guy either. Own a few but that's more of a collecting type deal.

Any thoughts on the XD9?

I've got the gun you passed by, the XD40. My thought after I'd run a few rounds through it was "yeah, this is the gun", the holy grail at last.

I like it a lot. Fits my hand, I can hit what I shoot at, and it dumps expended cases in a nice pile. Magazines are relatively inexpensive.

If it feels like the gun was molded to your hands and you're happy with the caliber and all the features of the weapon then have at it. I've heard nothing but great things about XD's. The only reason I don't own one is because they don't have that "special" feel in my hands. Great guns though. Oh and please don't let anyone change your mind about it "not being a glock" or "only being a 9mm". I'm a fan of .40 S&W myself but I also know that some people are killed by one shot from a .22 and some walk away from a .45. Shot placement is where it counts. If you decide it's going to be your go to gun. Get lots of practice with it.

Following the news around here, it seems to me that suspects that the police shoot with a .40 don't have fatal wounds very often. Well maybe they got stopping power, you don't hear of the suspects returning fire after a solid hit but with the news, it is anyone's guess if they drop like a rock or what. I have had one .40 and it was not much of a shooter but that might be just the design, not the round's fault. I do own several 9's and with good ammo, they are supposed to be effective. Did you ever try holding a nice 1911 pistol for the "feel"?

Snowmanx7,

Your choice is all wrong, perhaps not you, but for the nation. You need to get back on the binge buying bandwagon and spend, spend, spend! Our nation's economy depends on it. :D

Seriously, I'll be happy for you if the XD9 is your end all handgun. It is an excellent gun and, backing up what others have said with my own first hand knowledge, Springfield's service is fantastic if you ever need it.

I think this might finally be MY pistol.

That's how I felt about my p226. Then I got the Desert Warrior. Now I have two guns that are radially different, both in feel and action, that are my go to guns.

I agree with the folks that said not to worry what anyone else feels and be happy you found that one that fits you the best.

I have nearly 30 firearms, mostly handguns, and more than half of them are "something special" guns, one of X number rare, customized and or unique. Many are high capacity wonderguns, including an SVI racegun and a Briley high-cap officer's-sized frame and slide with a compensator that brings it to Commander slide length, etc. The one that fits my hand the best, that always goes boom, that feels about as perfect as a handgun can be . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . a retired police S&W Model 10 .38 nothing special! It was converted to DAO years ago but it has the best darned action I have ever felt in a wheelgun and all of my revolvers have had action jobs (except my carry 640 and my kitgun .22lr). The previous owner melted red wax over the front sight and took what looks like a dab of bar-b-q grill flat black paint to the rear sight/top strap. It wears partly wornout rubber grips and there is significant blue wear from repeated holstering. Just what you'd expect a twenty year old police revolver to look like.

Best of luck! It took me over 25 years to find my fit!

I've got an XD-9 Tactical (5")

When I first started shooting it, it would reliablky eject brass into the center of my forehead. Found out the cheapest cure for that was to replace the recoil spring with a 16# stock 1911 spring. Ejects clean over mt shoulder now.

The gun is boring.

I pull the trigger, the gun goes bang, the bullet hits what I aim at, the brass gets ejected and a new cartridge gets chambered. It doesn't excite me. It serves as my bedroom gun.

My opinion, and just me this morning...

stick with rifles and shotguns... sounds to me like you will never be happy. How many times you been married?

then again, I'm from a different side of the camp. Never sold or traded a gun in my life.

and therein lies your problem

While I personally prefer my EAA Witnesses,I demonstrably shoot the 1911 platform best.

So I own three Witnesses, but four (and counting) 5" all-metal 1911 platforms.

Do you know what I mean?

Thanks for all the replies guys. And for the record I just got done with my first marriage. It's not that I'm not happy with or don't like some of my other pistols. I love them all. I just haven't found that one pistol. And if the XD isn't it, I'll try again. If nothing else, it's an excuse to buy more guns.:D

When I first read the heading I thought Wildalaska misplaced his Seacamp again. I was going to recommend checking the dryer.

XD or XDM?

The XDm is a lot easier on my eyes than the XDs.

I hate to admit it, but hand fit is only part of it for me. They have to fit well, shoot well from my hand, AND be pleasing to my eye.

Glock didn't do it for me. The Hi Power might just be it. Very easy to shoot well, very comfortable, pretty good looking & slim for a high capacity 9mm.

For now, MY pistol is still my Ruger Mk. II Target model. Not very macho, but accurate, comfortable, and beautiful. At least to me.

Just out of curiosity, why isn't a CZ75 YOUR pistol? Everyone raves about their comfort & accuracy, and they look pretty great too.

I do have a CZ-75 semi-compact. Actually it was the first pistol I ever owned. I do like it very much but it just isn't perfect. Personally I don't like the XD-M. The XD is better looking IMHO. Both feel good in the hand though.
