Trusting the untested gun

Trusting the untested gun

I would never do it. The key word is "I".

It is common sense. You don't need to shoot it all the time or even close to that much, but you at least have to get it to battle ready: tested and reliable and trusted by you w/your choice of ammo.

Master Blaster,

New In The Box is fine, and not shooting is ok. Please do NOT defend your home, family, or self with a weapon you have not fired though. Don't count on the factory shot. Choose your ammo if and when the vaquero will be your HD, SD, or CCW weapon and shoot some cylinders worth at the very least right after one another.

I do more than that, but you'd be surprised how different the mindset is to knowing you're gun is good-to-go and just not knowing for sure.

I know a third feeling: I know what if feels like to not trust a new weapon that was a defense weapon. It has happened to me twice. It isn't a good feeling, and it was extremely frustrating since it happened with my first gun purchase.

The first time I realized at night when I went to bed that this was BS!! I did more fullproof tests the next day to confirm my doubts and was allowed to return the weapon actually(he said he'd have no idea what I looked like if I came in for my 7day return and just to not mention shooting it). the second time it was the ammo. I have actually seen it in another cheap weapon as well, but that was an easy fix. It shouldn't happen but it does. Anyone who doesn't shoot much but does have a SD/HD weapon, please take advantage of some opportunity to shoot it by at the very least buying a chosen SD/HD ammo, enjoying yourself, and then using said ammo as your emergency defensive ammo w/the firearm.

Unfortunately there is no reasoning with her, she is in fact convinced she'd even be capable of shooting the knife out of an assailants hand should the situation arise. It's a doubly risky situation, since we have an untested gun carried by an "untested" individual.

I have a slight more sympathy for a woman, and maybe that is wrong. One thing she needs to know though and I am confident about it(right or wrong):

if she aims for the head, knife, etc, she'll miss every shot considering her lack of experience firing that gun.

Her only chance - again in my opinion - is to aim straight, centermass. She might be able to get thru the SD situation a victor if she follows these rules and of course that is if you relay the info and she has a functioning gun:D

The two times it happened to me trying to test my new firearm where the weapon was unreliable: once it was a taurus revolver and the ammo I was using(which should've been fine). The cylinder wouldn't turn after 1 or two shots if that. It never happened with extensive tests of the 2nd ammo I chose. The ammo which wouldn't work(blame it on taurus) was recomended and one of the most popular hollow point rounds on the market.

It happenes to semis, revolvers, bellyguns(deringers), etc, etc. They must be tested if you are using them to defend your life or someone elses. If you pull a gun that doesn't go bang you are as good as dead.

I've had numerous conversations with people about carrying a gun. To me it comes down to this, if you are not prepared to shoot someone if your life is threatened then you shouldn't carry a gun.

Otherwise your gun becomes a weapon for your attacker. I doubt if they will have any issues with shooting you.

Besides which, I could make the argument that every trigger pull invariably puts you one round closer to a failure that WILL eventually happen. Maybe at 500 rounds, maybe 5000 or 50,000, but it WILL happen.
Why push it?
Taking this argument at face value...why ever fire the first round?

Since I've been around guns for well over 40 years I can tell alot about SOME guns.

S&W, Colt, and Ruger DA revolvers I can hand cycle and tell pretty much if the gun will go bang or not. BUT, I sure can't tell if they shoot where the sights look without firing.

But with say six shots I'd know just where that wheelgun shot along with if it was reliable enough for SD.

Of all the simi-autos about the only new guns I'd trust right out of the box are Glocks. And I'd even bet they shoot fairly near where the sights look. I sure would not bet any other make would go past the first round and definably not several mags.

But it is mighty wise to fire that gun first some before packing, even a Glock, cause all things made by humans fail now and then.

I have never shot my SA Rugers Montado because it will dirty up the pretty stainless steel revolver. It even has custom grips. I have 5 other SA revolvers so why? Will it work if I load it and pull the trigger. Oh Ya.
You ASSume it will fire. That thought process is just astounding to me.

What happens if the guy building that gun had an off day? The FFL that sold it to you had a young gunsmith that likes to take apart new guns for practice? Who knows, but wow, what a ridiculous approach to take with something you are going to count on to save your life should the need arise. All because you don't want to get it dirty? I'm sorry. Ridiculous.

So, upon further consideration, I realized that it is no man's place to tell another man how to handle his business. I should probably mind my own.
My apologies.

I own four XDs. Qualed on three of them. Just got #4 and haven't fired it yet. I will at the night shoot Monday night though.

Cock it, put a pencil down in the cylinder, if it shoots out it works.

I can't imagine having a gun that I'm too proud of to shoot, yet willing to have confiscated after a self defense shooting and subjected to whatever abuse the investigators want to put it through.

I've shot all my carry guns and am willing to loose them to the authorities if need be. (One at a time, of course.)

The only way you can know (and have confidence ) that your CC is going to work, is to work it. The difference between ignorance and stupidity is you can fix ignorance.

I fixed a TCP that went back to Taurus three times. When it failed after the third trip, it was gone. The two pistols I carry in rotation have never failed to fire, ever.
