transfer or not transfer.... bar that is

No way in hell could you talk me into converting a perfectly good "old model" and lord help us when we've become so corrupted that half the post here would be for such.

No change in value? BS.

The only reason I'd have it done is to get a sixth round. I don't see how it's a flaw or a safety issue. Load one skip the next, it's not rocket science and doesn't take a marine or different era to make a kid understand that.

I had a single six back when they first started the conversion process. I almost sent mine in.......................... but I the chance to shoot a couple of friend's single six's that just had the conversion done.
Both gun's trigger were terrible compared to what they were before the conversion. After that I just left mine alone.:D

* As I recall both guns were converted back to the original trigger setup??

A combination of posters' responses is in order IMO. Leave the OM alone for your enjoyment and future value purposes, and get the kid a NM. As someone also said, the NM triggers can be honed to be pretty nice....and, regardless, any "inferiority" of the new vs old is entirely inconsequential to the young one at this time. Teach the kid the differences--with you present at all shooting sessions--so he continues into adulthood with the proper knowledge that there are/have been a variety of firearms and actions, ignition systems, etc, and he has a healthy respect for them. There may be reasons for you to not have a transfer bar, but none I can think of for the kid not to have one--while he's a kid anyway. My .02.

Out of curiosity, how much collectors value does a single six have?

I can see not wanting to mod a 18something colt SAA, but the single six doesn't seem like a collectors piece so much as a shooter anyway. Since they're neither rare nor historic, and are still being made, I'd think there would be a limited number of people who would be willing to pay more for an old gun then they would for a new one (I certainly wouldn't).
But, I've never been in the market for a used single six, so I could be wrong.
Also, if you're planning on giving it to your rather than selling it, what do you care what it's worth to a collector?

Personally I'd get the mod done. Not because it's a boy-killing death machine without the mod, but because the mod does make it a tiny bit safer. And, I do lots of annoying crap because it makes things a tiny bit safer for my boy.
But, it honestly doesn't seem like that big of a deal either way.

I don't think it's that big of a deal either. Personally, I'd have it done. No downside to being able to load and carry an extra round safely. Furthermore, I've tried the trigger pulls on two different Ruger sa revolvers over the years that were "modified" by having Ruger install a transfer bar and I could not discern any significant difference in the pull (pound of pull, creep or otherwise) between the two "before and after". Others have apparently had different experiences; I can only speak to mine.
