Training: Can a flinch be unlearned?

One other thing that's mentioned in this months Peterson's Handgun magazine that makes sense, though I've never tired it. Do you have a scoped handgun? If so, try having her dry fire it. She will see the effect off flinching right away. Just a thought.

I shoot close to 12,000 rounds a year and am still plagued by flinching if I am not careful. I have learned to do a "controlled flinch" but still strive for a perfect, surprise break.

Be sure to mention to your wife that steady even pressure should be placed on the trigger SLOWLY. The break of the trigger should be a complete surprise. Instruct her to use the the pad of the first section of her index finger to contact the trigger. Describe it as TRIGGER PRESS instead of squeeze, pull, etc., as this will imply a more straight backward and controlled movement.

As she progresses to faster, timed shooting. Introduce her to the compressed surprise break, which is the next progression from the surprise break. Also, from shot to shot, explain to her TRIGGER RESET to prevent slapping the trigger.

The other advice (ball and dummy drills, etc.,) in the above posts are all excellent.

Hey guys,
Man, I am overwhelmed by the wealth of sound training advice I am getting from my time of TFL. My wife wasn't too wild about me buying our first gun or about me talking with "gun nuts" (she's led a sheltered life ;)). But then I sat her down and had her read the responses y'all have given and it's changed her mind. She was pleasantly surprised by how helpful and well-spoken everyone is.

I wasn't surprised. I've always known that the type of citizens who spend the time to responsibly use firearms, help others to do so, and protect our rights to do so under the law are the salt of the earth and the backbone of the nation. Thank God for TFL! I appreciate all you're doing to help us out.

When I read the paper and hear the news about those gun-grabbing statists and their "risky schemes" to deprive us of both the pleasure and security of firearms, I get discouraged - I admit it. But I get on here and chat about this new hobby and it makes me happy to know there are better men out there working to keep this precious right for the future.

I'm misting up so I'll close now.... :)
