Trail/hiking handgun

I don't NEED one because I already have a GP 100 and a 1911...but I want another gun:D

It would be nice to have something a little more compact. The worst-case critter would likely be a javelina...you never know how they'll act if you surprise one.

Give me some ideas...I do need to limit the cost, though. Let's say 450 bucks. I'm open to autos or revolvers, I don't discriminate.

I think the SS GP 100-4 is the perfect trail/camp gun, but in something a little more compact I would go with an SP 101-3". It would be a bit more than your budget, but only a few dollars and well worth it IMO. A Ruger SR9c would be a reasonable choice as well. Easy to carry with the 10 rnd mag, and very much like a full size 9mm with the 17 rnd and grip extension. If plastic offends a CZ 75 is a fine choice...

How about a Smith 642?

I don't know if that was met as a joke or not, but that is exactly what I carry while hiking, land crousing, or horseback riding.

It works for snakes and critters and its good for putting rabbits on the spit when you stop for lunch.

Except when I'm actually hunting and have a rifle, its all I carry.

My first thought for a smaller gun was an SP101 3" or 4".

Since you already have a 38/357 GP100, I think I would look over the 22LR version of the SP101. For my woods carry gun I mainly carry my 4" S&W 64, and my 4" S&W 617. The 22 LR is a handy platform for Trail Plinking, as you can carry a fair amount of ammo for it. Also low noise.

I think a .22lr is a fine choice as well if that is enough gun for the angry Javelina. Never been in their company, so don't know much about them other than they average 50 lbs and can grow to around 80 according to the Interwebz.:D

I have a smith 442 and an LC9 right on loan from a buddy. The J frame is a bit squirrelly when you shoot it, but it's okay. Haven't tried the little ruger yet.

I do like the SP101...a .22 or .32 might be cool.

A Smith 637 might be easier to shoot than the 442/642 and still weigh the same.
An sp101 in .38 would weigh more but might be easier to shoot.

If you don't like the 442, maybe you'd like an sp101 or a 3" J frame in .32. I've got a 31-1 that's easy to tote and easy to shoot. I'd personally prefer a .38 or bigger for protection but the .32 would probably do.

I usually carry a Glock 26 in 9mm which may be in your price range.

If I got a J frame it would be the 637. I like shooting a revolver single action.

I just ran a few rounds through the LC9 when I went to feed the chickens. Much easier to control than I expected.

Nope, no chicken:) Just shot tin cans.

I looked on Bud's and the SP 101 is a bit more than I want to spend. I wish double action 22 revolvers weren't so expensive.

Hey, does anybody know how a 22 handgun will perform on a javelina? I really just want to make it go away, dead or not.

Lee, nice but pricey. That does remind me about the Vaquero Sheriff's model on sale at Bud's for $419. Sweet gun. Ammo prices for 44 or 45 make reloading a requirement, though.

Okay , Bull Rider. Guess a 22 is out. I wouldn't need to shoot a javelina while on a walk unless it was already ticked off.
