Trading a Ruger GP-100 6" for a 4"

Chopping the lug isn't precision work. Seriously. Blade or otherwise. You don't need to go to a big-name house like C&S.

If you use a regular local machinist you'll need to be there the whole time as without a gunsmithing version of an FFL he can't take possession of the thing (and you can't ship it to him). But that's not a huge problem. With the cylinder completely removed (as is simple on a Ruger) there won't be any safety issues even if the machinist isn't a hardcore gun guy.

Hrm...technically you COULD take the barrel off and ship that but I seriously don't recommend it. Esp. not on a stainless gun. When I pulled the barrel on my NewVaq357 it was an amazing pain in the keister and that was on a blued steel piece - stainless is much worse and the threads may not survive so...no. Don't go there.

I was in the same boat a while back: Bought my 6 inch 686 25 years ago when I didn't carry. I recently decided I would like a 4 inch full size .357 to carry in the woods. I thought about trading my 686 for a minute, but I just can't give her up. So, I bought a 3 inch SP and recently, a 2 3/4 inch Speed Six. I found that the 3 inch is easier to carry than a four and I am just as accurate with it. My problem solved.....
Unless you have a personal connection to you 6 inch, trade up for a 4. Might as well get you really want and you can always buy another 6 inch down the road if you want.

I picked up a GP100 with the 6" barrel yesterday. Why did I go with the 6" barrel? Because they don't make one with an 8 3/8" barrel. I like long barreled revolvers (and short barreled rifles). Being only 5'7" and 145 lbs soaking wet guns like the GP100 are just too big for me to conceal properly even with the 3" barrel. So in my case I see no reason to give up the longer sight radius and added velocity. I shoot much better with a longer sight radius anyway. Compared to my 8 3/8" 686 the 6" GP100 feels just right. Another 1.5" of barrel would of been nice though.

Keep the one you have and chase down a:

I had a 6 inch security six and sold it for a 4 inch s & w 586. The ruger was very good but the 586 is better. The smith is an older 1980 something vintage.

Here is another oddball GP100 that might interest the OP. I picked this one up from the LGS consignment sale shelf recently. This is a model GPF340 GP100. 4.2" barrel, fixed sights, half-lug barrel. She shoots great, by the way:

I have a6" by my bed but carry a 2" on my belt and for the car.....although mostly I carry a glock 21 ( which is also by my bed). don't sell the 6"!
