Tracking Stories of Self Defense - GunsSaveLives.net

I'm new here, but I'm very active on several other gun forums, so sorry if you're seeing this again.

I've setup a simple, streamlined site for tracking self defense stories in the news.

Hopefully this will turn into a great place to send people who ask questions like "Why would you ever need a gun?" or "Who ever really uses a gun to defend themselves?"

Anyone can submit a story.

I know it's not the first site of this kind, but I've got it setup in such a way that it's extremely quick and easy for me to manage. I've also hopefully minimized copyright issues with this setup.

Today's updates share a common theme. Stories of children who successfully defended themselves and others using firearms.

And people say children should never be exposed to firearms.

10 Year Old Child in Baton Rouge Shoots Home Invader (2009)
15 Year Old Texas Boy Shoots Burglar, Defends Sister (2010)
11 Year Old Texas Boy Shoots Home Invaders, Defends Mother (2010)
11 Year Old Girl Defends Home with .22 Rifle (2010)
Son Uses Dad’s AR-15 To Defend Home (2010)

Added a bunch of stories since yesterday including these which have happened in the last couple of days:
Armed Pizza Employee Pulls Gun On Armed Robber (FL)
Armed Robber Killed by Liquor Store Clerk in Chicago
Armed Shreveport Store Clerk Shoots Armed Robbers
Augusta, GA Man Kills Armed Attacker

And these older stories which show that firearms can be the ultimate equalizer for those who can't always physically fight back:
77 Yr Old Cincinnati Man Shoots Intruders (2010)
Wheelchair Bound Fla Man Shoots Attacker (2009)
78 Yr Old Texas Man Shoots Robber (2009)
Pregnant Mother Holds Robber At Gunpoint For Police (2009)

Thanks again for people who have taken the time to help with submissions, volunteer work, etc.

Yep, the only thing the NRA's Armed Citizen doesn't always do is provide a link back to the source story, which is the main thing I wanted to do so people can find the original article and take place in the discussions that usually accompany those articles.

Haven't been able to update the site like I wanted to this weekend, but I did add in several new, recent stories. Should be back to full speed this week. Thanks again for those that take time to submit stories and comment.

I just bookmarked the site. Great job with it. Although I'm a bit perturbed by the number of cases coming out of Florida compared to the other states.

Very nice layout. Once you get a larger collection of stories I think the site will really pick up steam. The linking back to the original source really sets it apart.

I agree. I think once the "Counter" is at 1k+ it will be a really nice resource for people to point to when someone asks silly questions like Who would ever need a gun?

Have you thought about caching the original source? Some of that stuff disappears when they redo sites.
I'd love to do that, but in today's world of frivolous copyright lawsuits I don't want to risk recreating the content at all.

I try to find Youtube videos for stories when I can as I can just embed those right on the site and they tend to stick around longer than news articles.

I could, but fair use is a defense to a lawsuit that is already happening. This is a side thing for me and if there was a lawsuit (even if it had no merit) I would have to at minimum pay an attorney to write a couple of letters and more than likely attend a hearing to get the thing dismissed. Given hourly rates for attorneys, that could get costly quickly. So I'll unfortunately have to stick with my current methodology.

Although, Google does cache most pages online, so maybe I could link to their cached version. I'll have to do some research to see how long those cached pages are available for though.

Hmmm, good point. Perhaps you could look and see if the Wayback Machine is caching these pages.

Just trying to be helpful. Better to get things right the first time instead of chasing down broken links later.

Thanks for the encouraging words.

Quite a few good stories added over the last few days. Seems people taking a stand is getting more and more common. Also it seems Florida, Texas, and Georgia have the highest rate of self defense instances involving firearms. I guess those people would just be crime victims in some states.

One of my favorite quotes that is very relevant...

"We continue to be exasperated by the view, apparently gaining momentum in certain circles, that armed robbery is okay as long as nobody gets hurt! The proper solution to armed robbery is a dead robber, on the scene."
-Jeff Cooper

I apologize for the lack of updates, but I got married last month so that left little time for managing the site.

Been going through the backlog for the last few days. Several new, interesting stories added.
