TP9SA vs Glock 17

Ok so I originally was going to get a TP9SA as my first semi auto along side a 1911 in 45 on Tuesday when background check clears but then I can into a little extra money on tax return and see Glock 17 offering all the same things I want from a 9mm as TP9SA. The TP9SA seems to be incredibly reliable at an amazing price but the Glock is more established and has more aftermarket parts. Help me decide between the two and which generation of Glock 17 if that’s your preference?

Have you handled the Glock? If so, which fits your hands better? Have you shot the Glock? If not, try to find a range with rentals (everyone who does rentals probably has at least one Glock 17 on offer) and see how you like it. If it doesn't fit your hand or shoot well for you, you probably shouldn't even consider it. From what I've read, the TP9 is a good gun (and a great bargain for the price) so if the Glock works for you, it comes down more to preference.

That said, while it may not make me popular among some here, I don't think a Glock is a good beginners gun. You said you are getting your 1st semi auto, have you been shooting revolvers, or will these be your first handguns? If you have been shooting revolvers, and the Glock fits you, go for it. If you are new to handguns, the light trigger of many striker fired pistols with the lack of a safety make them intermediate and experienced shooter guns IMO. The fact that you have to pull the trigger as part of the take-down process doesn't make a Glock great for beginners either. Heck, I am a huge 1911 fan and they aren't great beginners guns in many cases either. If it is a range gun it is fine, but for CCW or home defense I prefer something as revolver-like as possible. A revolver, DAO or DA/SA are my choices for a 1st handgun so you don't get tripped up by the safety when you need it (it takes a lot of practice to be sure that won't be an issue). Of course, if you already have a revolver, you have something you can use while you train with the 1911 to be familiar with the safety and overcome that potential problem.

The TP9SA has a decocker as a safety measure when going to disassemble gun. My old nagant revolver had the heaviest trigger pull I’ve felt and ammo being so pricey is main reason I ditched it. The Glock I want for reputation of taking abuse and not jamming. I’m not made of money so can’t afford buying new guns often which is why I may spend more on Glock than TP9SA. I don’t hear of either breaking often but Glock seems to have longer history

I wouldn't own the TP9SA. A decocker on single action trigger is dumb and dangerous in a self defense situation.

I'd recommend you either get a TP9SF or a Glock 19.

I find a I shoot Glock 19's better than 17's. The 19 is also a little easier to conceal than a 17.

When I held it the decocker didn’t come off as something easy to accidentally press so it’s a non issue. pros and cons of 17 over 19?

Without any doubt on my part, the Glock 19 or 17. Much more established brand, grip angle does not bother me and in fact helps me as it mitigates recoil and locks my hand and wrist together.

The 1911A1 has much the same grip angle.

I wouldn't own the TP9SA. A decocker on single action trigger is dumb and dangerous in a self defense situation.

I've seen a solution to this problem by taking the decocking plate off, cut down a piece of wire (I think it was a coat hanger or small nail) and inserted through the spring coils thereby preventing the decocking plate from being depressed.

To (hopefully) address you question a little more than has been done...
If the Glock feels comfortable to you, then I'd get that over any model TP9. Mostly for reputation, aftermarket parts, holster options, and spare/replacement parts. In terms of what generation, I'd get whatever you can get the best deal on. The Gen4's primary advantage over the Gen3 is the interchangeable grip pieces for inproved hand fit.

Personally, I would get the TP9 and take that "little extra money" and put it into a savings account.

Well it looks like things have changed..

Glock 17 / Which Generation?
I also think that if you are going to carry you may want to look at a G19.
I agree that both should be easy rentals..so give them a shoot and it will become clear which you like.

If you are going to carry...
Have you given any thought to a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 2.0
Or the larger M&P9 2.0

I carry the original M&P Shield 9.
I also carry a Sig Sauer P320 Compact RX with Romeo Red Dot sight $750.00
However a non Red Dot P320 Compact costs what a Glock 17 or 19 does.

There is a lot of buzz over the new Sig Sauer P365 12+1 9mm.
I want to check one out though It may be too small for my hand,
I don't know as I have not even held one yet.

If your budget has changed you have a lot of choices in the 400 to 500 to 600 dollar range.

Do your homework and I'm sure that you will find what you want.

Have you shot a TP9SA?
In this video the newer TP9V2 the decocker is a actual decocker where in the TP9SA it is just for take down.
The first few minutes of this video explain that.

Here's the thing - if you really want a Glock but can't get over the price difference (which really is negligible when you factor in what you'll eventually spend on ammo), which not just get a used Glock?

They are plentiful and the only parts you have to really worry about wearing out are the recoil and slide lock springs, both of which are inexpensive and easily replaced.

Hdwhit. Yeah I may get TP9SA to save money but looking at long term I wonder if spending extra on the Glock would be better investment. If TP9 breaks on me gonna cost more to fix it than if I just bought the Glock. But I’m gun noob. I’m more knowledgeable than the average person in basic function but no where near an expert.

USMC, with all respect I must say that I do not like your idea.

Putting a small piece of metal into the guts of a pistol, expecting it to stay in place and not fall into the worst possible location and totally jam the sear, is being quite a bit overconfident. Murphy made it into the 21st Century and will be happy to screw with any pistol so modified.

Who has had too many unmodified pistols go bad. I mean, having the sear spring from an HK fall out onto the shooting bench? It happened.

I don't know who sold you on this TP9SA but they aint doing you any favors. 10 years from now that Glock will still have some value to it. If you want to trade it for something else.

That Turkish gun aint going to hold it's value especially when you buy the model that everyone hates.

For a 1st pistol, stick to brand names that have factory support and/or a huge aftermarket - Sig, Springfield, S&W, H&K, Glock, Ruger, CZ.

Yeah I’m probably gonna go with a Glock. Getting background check delayed was great as I got time to think before buying. Just hope he doesn’t have to do a second background check if choose an entirely different gun

Would you say the extra money on a Glock is paying for name or is it a significant quality increase over TP9?

I would say neither necessarily. But you are paying for good customer service, the peace of mind that comes with a known level of QA/QC, and ease of finding inexpensive spare parts, accessories, and magazines.

Good advice on here.. the Glock is the better choice, good luck.. Coming from a Guy that uses Glockman for a screen name..lol I own one Glock now.. G27..

Now question is gen 5 or gen 4. 17 or 19. Held 17(don’t remember what generation) at gunshop and was comfy. Is recoil and accuracy much different between 17 and 19? If not I’ll go with 19 for easier carry while still getting full size experience. And which gen is best? Also thoughts on glock maintenance l, high or low maintenance for starter gun? I will be stopping by gunshop today or tomorrow as soon as they tell me my background check is done
