I know that these are all over the board (price wise) but I am debating for something in the CCW realm that is small (for CCW AND my small hand.) I like the Kahr's feel, I like the Star's weight and size and I love the Taurus' size and clip capacity. I am undecided on the caliber yet...Kahr I would probably go for the 9mm (K9) I would go 9mm or 40 in the Star and probably 40 or 45 in Taurus. For this poll...let's assume that they are ALL 9mm (just to keep things simple.)

Some things to remember:
1. CCW/home defense (my ONLY pistol)
2. SMALL hands
3. price (not the ONLY issue, but a consderation)
4. will NOT be competing with it, just protecting my butt with it.

Please advise!

What's the price on the Kahr's as compared to a Glock 19?

The latter would be my choice, if price is comparable. If the G19 is too expensive, then the Kahr would get my nod of those you listed.

Go handle them and test fire them if possible if you can find a range that rents them. The Kahrs have a short trigger reach, which might be a plus.

The Kahr is not much cheaper than the Glock, if my area is to be any indication.

And, I'd say stick with the K series of Kahr. I'm seeing a lot of reports of problems with the P series of Kahrs.

My Kahr K9 has been incredible. Accurate, easy to shoot, ultra reliable, you name it.

My only gripe against it is that the finish, parkerizing, allows rusting if you look crosseyed at it.

I voted "other" beacuse . . .

I do not consider any of the alternatives you provided to have consistently obtained the quality needed in a real personal defense sidearm, although Kahr's may be close. For the same price, how about a first-class revolver (such as a Ruger SP-101) or a reconditioned police turn-in Glock, H&K, Sig and so forth?

Let me suggest that you also check the Kel-Tec P-11...light, inexpensive, simple, reliable. You should be able to find one in the mid-$200 range.

Best of all, it meets all your criteria.

In the unlikely event that something is wrong with your pistol, Kel-Tec customer service is the best I've ever experienced from any firearms mfr.

Ditto on the Kel-Tec. I've seen 'em as low as $199 at a recent gun show. They do have a long, heavy DAO trigger pull, which could be a drawback for some people.

I carry a Kel-Tec P-11. If I had the bux, might get a Kahr. But the P-11 is fine. The trigger pull can be made decent fairly easily. www.ktog.org has forums with lots of detail.

None of the above

I must agree with RWK. The 9mm is not a first choice for a personal defense round. Beyond that with price being an issue, I would look for a used H&K USP compact in the 40 or 45 range. Otherwise the Ruger SP101 is a excellent choice. Inexpensive, solid construction, and you can fire anything in it from .38 to .357 range . I have one for when I am in a hurry and need something small to toss in a bag or glovebox.

Other...

Any of the small Glocks. Reasonabley priced. Reliable. Easy to maintain. Accurate. Concealable. Easily personalized with lots of accesories. What else do you need to know?

I have a Kahr P9 and love it. No problems, ever. I also have small hands and it just feels right. It also is very accurate.

I suggest a SIG Sauer P225. They can be found for less than 500$ new (I bought mine for 479$) and more than meet your requirements.

CCW

Check the Kahr MK9. It is reasonably small and 9mm is powerful enough for most of us. If the weight is too heavy for you, try a Colt Mustang pocketlight. The .380 is ok with the right defensive loads.

If it is to be your only pistol, I think you are on the right track with the 9mm. Whatever you choose, practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more. The price of 9mm ammo (at least in my area) is damn near half that of the .40 or .45 (or .380 as someone mentioned).

I was in the gun store today drooling over a Barrett rifle when a customer walked in wanting an inexpensive gun that he could maybe shoot once a year and have just in case. I bit my lip to the point I drew blood, but if I had said anything I'm sure everyone standing there would have regretted it.

I would get the Taurus Millennium, but not the PT-111. I would get the PT-145 in .45ACP. I have way small hands (I wear an extra small glove) and the PT-145 fits just like it, the glove that is!!! I have 650 trouble free rounds through it and it will print sub 2in groups at 25 yards. The recoil is very mild too!!!

Sorry Gaston!! :p
