Top Shot returns this month.

Anyone watch the first episode of the new season of Top Shot last night?
It was much improved from the previous ones.
No phony drama, just straight competition.
The competitors said that this is the way it always should have been.
Now, it's worth watching.

Yes, I watched it and enjoyed it much better without all the scheming and bickering. However, I kept wondering if the show would be interesting enough for folks that don’t shoot and have no clue how difficult many of those shots really are.

Enjoyed it thoroughly although they made the grenade shot look like a dive bomber hit it WHHOOOOSSSH!

Liked the old rooskie gun right off the bat.

Agreed though this could be a problem with nonshooting viewers. Reality shows have to have catfighting conflict. Its the standard. What the actual "reality" is, is almost irrelevant.

I watched and enjoyed the program last evening. I also thought the new format was more enjoyable without the "reality show bickering" or whatever the name is for it.

I was a little disappointed to see the old contestants back on as opposed to some new meat for the grind.

It was evident to me the first selected shooter on the course was at a distinct disadvantage. The later your draw, the more you learned from other's mistakes and able to compensate for the course. The only way to change this might be to not allow the other competitior observe the running of the course prior to their shooting time. Did you notice how some started adjusting for the swaying of the shooting stand on the last firing point? Instead of jumping on the stand, they started tip-toeing onto it to minimize the swinging. This is if they were totally unaware of the course and did not practice bofore their runs.

I liked the old show but sometimes fast-forwarded through bickering. The new show without nominations and teams is much more enjoyable. Everything is skill-based. Shooters stay or leave based purely on their ability to perform under pressure. A great change.

I kind of like the fact that this season is an All-Stars season, so that we get to see some of the better shooters from seasons past go up against each other. The Little McGee didn't like the green shirts, though. She thinks that because the old team shirts were red and blue, the no-team shirts oughta be purple.

Now, if only the other shows would take the hint.
Like dropping all the drama crap from Son's O' Guns and the like, in favor of showing how the guns actually get made.
Probably too much to hope for, though.

Did anyone notice that some of the more popular guys from the previous shows had the worst performance?

I’m not 100% sure of their names, but a guy named Gary and the guy they call Gunny were sort of the leaders in the earlier shows and went far into the competition. However, this time neither looked very good in the first competition.

Sort of early, but based on my observation the young lady seems to have a pretty good chance.

As it is the beginning of the competition, there are a lot of shooters. I did not keep track but some have backgrounds in pistols, some with rifles and I maybe someone with shotguns. I am not sure.

I do know the primary event in the first event was rifle oriented. The semi-final event was a pistol but only challenged the botttom 5 I believe. Then there was the grenade launcher for the bottom two.

You may see pistol shooter do better in the next round in the event it is pistol oriented.

According to the previews, the next episode is going to be courses of fire from the realm of exhibition shooters.
Ones like Annie Oakley, Bob Munden and such.
You know, like shooting backward with a mirror.
Or splitting a bullet on an axe to hit two targets.
It should be quite a show.
Yeah, I'm rooting for the terrific, lonely female of the group, too.
If she hadn't just about fallen off the rope, she might have really kicked butt.
She is so accurate and calm about it all.

I never watched over 2 minutes of a single episode. I really don't watch tv. But come to my house 4-5 days a week and you'll see some top shots right in my yard. I do t need to watch others shoot I just like shooting myself.

I did notice that. Those guys were strong in most challenges during their seasons. iirc, Gunny's only weak performance was on the unstable platform with the FAL during Season 2. Having that same challenge come back was a bad break for him. Probably a big mental element for him, this time. I was shocked to see Gary have trouble.

There are a lot of class acts & quality shooters to root for, this season. Many have improved as shooters since we last saw them. Chris Cerino, Peter Palma, and Kelly Bachand should all be visibly stronger.

It would be impossible to pick a winner this season, but I expect Kelly, Gunny, and Cerino to be top six. Jamie Franks is a sleeper. He'll be top half, I think.

Generally, I like the show. Dislike the drama. The shooting challenges are everything from fun and interesting to borderline rediculous action movie stuff that will never happen to any of us in real life. Fun to watch, though.

One thing I cannot help but wish, how much better would it be (and how much better would the contestants do) if they used their own guns? Or, at least, allowed each shooter practice and sight in with the gun they are going to be shooting.

Looking at previous shows, where a lot of the targets are hit or miss (bottles, plates, etc), giving a contestant an afternoon to shoot a box or so from an unfamiliar gun, (everyone using the same gun, no sight adjustments allowed), then watching them miss by just a tiny bit (love those high speed closeups of the bullets just missing the edge of the jug, etc), is it any wonder some don't do as well as their resume might suggest?

Of course, that's their premise, they are looking for the best shot, with whatever they hand them, not the best marksman possible.

Generally fun to watch, for me. Haven't seen the new episode, yet, but I'm sure I'll catch it soon.

I like the new format without all the drama!

This was the first thing I noticed! No elimination range, and no teams? Yay for less drama. Though, I did notice that they did bring certain individuals who had history with each other. Like Adam Benson and Kelly Bachand from season 1. If I remember right, they kinda hated each other, lol.

Chris Cerino, Peter Palma, and Kelly Bachand should all be visibly stronger.

They were all, always strong. In Kelly's case, he was underestimated by the other competitors. They figured he'd be good with a rifle, and that's it. Yet, he was probably one of the strongest overall. He was great with a rifle, one of the best with the odd weapons, and better than most with the pistol. Iain Harrison and Cerino were just better with pistols and only slightly less skilled than Kelly at rifles. He was actually my favorite in Season 1, and he got picked on because he was the rich kid with no LE or Military experience, who was outshooting the pros, members of the military and LE guys. I honestly think he may be the one to watch this season. But as we've seen, the best shooters aren't always the ones to move on.

I've been essentially amazed, every season, that professional competition shooters don't do better against people who appear to be hobbyists. When they did the "where are they now segments", the people who went home early were training for a national or world championship, while the winners were going to go fishing, or feed the livestock, or hug their kids.
I know that the show plays very, very coy with the backgrounds of some of the shooters, calling a guy with multiple national championships at Camp Perry something like a "vintage rifle enthusiast", but still. Guys with no competition background at all, were more than up to the challenge of competing head-to-head with shooters who "live" for competition shooting.
