Took another young person shooting for his first time out.

Well done. That sounds very similar to how I was introduced to shooting.

I am good friends with the father of a friend of mine. So much so that when his son (my friend) moved to OH, I still went fishing and hung out with his father. After several talks that focused on my limited knowledge of firearms, he took me to the range with a great deal of his collection. We shot mostly handguns but a few high-power rifles, too. No 1911s that I remember (otherwise, that would probably have been my fist handgun purchase!), but I do recall killing cans at 15 yards with Single Six and blowing holes in paper with a .270 at 100 yards.

He helped me get into flyfishing, shooting, and to some extent, hunting. I can't thank him enough for it either.

Hit the can with the Neos on the first shot?

And I always thought old age and treachery always overcame youth and skill.........

Met someone yesterday who went shooting for the first time last weekend.

Her brother handed her a Glock and told her to point it down range and pull the trigger.

What she recounted to me didn't sound like a pleasant experience for her.

I told her that usually people start out on a .22

I think there is a kind of mindset that some men have to put a gun in the hands of a woman and see her not do well with it - either have it knock her down, or she gets hit in the face with it when it recoils. There are a lot of videos on YouTube like this - they are usually called "My girlfriend vs. the 454 Casull" or "Wifey fires the S&W 500"

It boils down to having women play some stereotypical role of the fool, I'm not sure what the message is but I think it's driven by the negative stereotyping going on in their husbands' or boyfriends' heads.

I definately think it's important for responsible and experienced shooters to volunteer their time to educate new shooters.

I always take the .44 magnum,,,

But I never just put it their hands and say "Shoot."

I do want to give them the opportunity for "bragging rights" though.

So I'll generally shoot a few rounds so they can see and hear it,,,
Then I'll ask them if they would like to give it a whirl,,,
I've only had one girl say she didn't want to try.

But you are correct,,,
The .22's are what we spend most time with.

The one thing I am very consistent in promoting,,,
Is that every person needs to own at least one .22 handgun.

It doesn't even matter if it's a target or combat style,,,
They just need to own a decent .22 pistol for fun.
