Tomcat frame cracking still?

JERRYS.

the Beretta Tomcat .32 seems like an interesting pistol however, with the many many issues they had with the frame cracking I'm leery.

they made a stainless one and even a wide slide version, but nothing to address the aluminum frame that cracks where the trigger bar pin is.

does anyone know if Beretta has fixed this issue or is it still a buy and hope for the best?

thanks.

I have read so many "so called" expert opinions on the subject. I own a Inox Tomcat which all have the wider slide. I understand Beretta did make a later wide slide version of the standard version. Supposedly, this was to solve the problem, but some disagree.

I have also read the Tomcat was not designed for ammunition beyond a certain pressure point and the warning has been published.

I have owned my Tomcat for five years now and never had a problem.

What did Beretta do to cure the firing pins that popped out in the very first Tomcats? Stronger firing pin spring (thereby more pressure on the retaining plate). Of course, that hammer spring should be strong enough to over come that firing pin spring such that you still have enough energy to pop the primer.

Last I heard they discontinued the Tomcat line. I owned one briefly but sold it because I was reading so much about the frame cracking issues. Before selling it I called Beretta to see if they would swap mine for a stainless version since it was unfired and I told them I'd be willing to pay extra but they pretty much laughed at me. It's a shame too because I really liked the little thing and would have enjoyed having one I could shoot without worrying about it breaking.
People seemed to have fewer issues with the INOX version and some of the black tomcats were frame cracking even while using the recommended ammunition.

Tomcat

I cracked my first Tomcat about 6 years ago. Beretta replaced it free of charge. The replacement cracked just over a year ago. It wasn't under warranty so I kept it as it still fires. But I no longer carry it. Replaced it with a scandium S&W.

Marty, so their answer to the slide beating up the frame was not to improve the frame but to make the slide heavier? but as mj posted, it didn't help the two he had.

Mine has been okay. I haven't shot it a whole lot. It is heavy for its size. The tip-up barrel is a nice feature. I bought it used about a year ago and have no idea how old or young it is.

Tomcat

I really liked the Tomcat. Nice looking pistol and I like the da/sa trigger. The tip up barrel is probably the best feature. The frame cracking is not something that is normal. You have lighter and thinner pistols in more powerful caliber that do not have this issue. S&W makes revolvers that can fire .357 all day long and have no issues(your hand WILL). They are lighter than the Tomcat also.

I had two blue Tomcats crack in the past. Beretta offered no help whatsoever and told me when the frame cracked, it had reached it service life (they disregard the number of rounds fired). I wowed to never deal with Beretta again and unloaded all six other Beretta. The number one company on my lifetime ban is Beretta ($Hitty customer service and they had their second chance with me already).

as much as I like the 92s and the bobcats, their unwillingness to fix the tomcat problem, knowing it has a problem, still putting the same suspect product out there, and not standing behind it..... well it sort of does away with them in my book.

its like defending Capone by saying he was a good father.

Can anyone post a picture of where the crack(s) occur and what they look like? When it cracks, does it fail to fire (or some other malfunction) immediately? Or?

Here is one of my long gone cracked frame.

I don't know if it's going to affect function since I sold them off as parts with full disclosure of the problem for dirt cheap. F*ck Beretta for crappy customer service and a POS product.

Here is how you take care of your customer:
Had a Kahr CW380 with a crack at the recoil rod area on the frame. Email them pictures. They emailed back the return shipping label. Took them a week to have the gun back with a compete new slide (cost to me was $0) and no question asked).

Thank you, now I know where to look. So Beretta's fix to the frame cracking problem, was a different slide?

A thicker slide won't fix the problem with the frame.
