To CLean or not

Bought a Gen3 17 a few years ago, fired 1017 rounds before cleaning or lubing. I don't necessarily recommend it but it worked for me.

45Gunner GREAT comparison!

Metal on metal creates heat and friction. You wouldn't run your car without oil, why would you risk running your gun without lubrication?

My brother recently purchased his first gun a Taurus 709 slim line.
Since he knows very little about guns he brought it to me to clean and lube (after I told him too).
There was no, 0, nada lube on the slide or guide rails of the frame. Inside the slide the barrel had small rust spots.
On the Trigger bar, on the inside of the gun was a, best description a blob of green that was hard and when I touched it with a scribe it broke apart like candy.
This was a new gun in the box that had never been fired.
Also the trigger, slide stop, and everything else in the frame was dry as a popcorn fart.

As stated a patch or two through the barrel and DO NO REMOVE THE GOLD NEVER-SEIZE FROM THE RAILS/SLIDE,per the owners manual.

Lube, wipe, shoot, repeat.

2 times per year....detail strip and clean...unless you forget.

I think swishing around in a mud puddle is probably ok for a detail cleaning as long as you swab the bore dry!

"Great advice everyone. One probem for me is I've never field stripped
a semi."

All the more reason to do so now. It does no harm to understand the gun before shooting it.

Other than run a couple patches down the bore I don't think I've ever cleaned a new pistol before I shot it. What on earth would you be cleaning, some deposits left over after it was shot ten times. Some manufacturers specifically tell you do NOT clean it, Les Baer is one of them I can think of, they say wipe it down and shoot it. Always a good idea to run a couple patches down the bore though. Shipping grease is just grease, there is no magic grease used for shipping.

ETA; Just to clarify this is just my opinion and it's formed through my own experiences. I fully realize there are a bunch of people who always clean a new pistol, I'm just not one of them.
