To buy or not to buy a Makarov?

Blades...I can believe you ran across a Mak with a safety problem.
All of you who have twiddled and tweaked them..know the safety if the weak link. Im not defending anyone...but this makes sense.
I would still look hard at them. The odds of running into two that are bogus was pretty slim....but get another anyway. They are worth it.....Shoot well

OK, then my next question for you all is where in Central OH is there a supply of Makarovs available for purchase? I have yet to see one. Will I have to mail order one?

Mak Lover

Shelved my custom Colt commander and Custom Glock 19. I carry and EG Makarov off duty daily. It is my main carry gun.
I haven't been able to jam it yet with all types of ammo. I carry Hornady XTP's.

Blades you gotta lighten up, I really do not think Jody was dissing you!

I love my Makarov(s)

I bought an FEG PA63, in 9x18, on a whim. Like it a lot and it seems the Maks are better quality, so I've got them on my "must" list. The other pistol in this caliber that interests me is the CZ 83, sort of the "Cadillac" of the 9x18s.

Safety incl. spring is $23 from Makrov.com, delivered. They are very easy to replace (no tools required).

I beileve the safety/decocking mechanism of the Mak is very well designed indeed.

These guns were made and used in the millions. Soldiers from Com bloc nations used them for 40-plus years. They are breathtakingly simple and elegant in their function and design.

You may not like the caliber. You may prefer revolvers. You may prefer a tiny & light pocket gun. You may prefer 15-round capacity instead of 8. You may prefer target sights.

Otherwise, you may prefer a Makrov, at least one, in your collection.

I have HK's and Sigs and a Walther i carry the Mak just as often
i would not trade it infact i would trade all the rest except the
P7M8 before my Bulgie Mak.Go for it when they dry up they
will go up.....i would pay 2-3 times the going rate if it needed
replacement.

Just got an East German Mak (waiting period... argh!)

I am pleasantly surprised how good the trigger is. Unbelievable in a gun at this price.

Someone on another forum was making the point, how many countries and how many agencies in those countries have been using the Makarov for a duty weapon, for 40+ years... the only other semiauto to rival that track record is the 1911.

Though admittedly, .45 ACP is bit more potent cartrige...

I have four, Russian Military, Bulgarian, 2 East Germans. No problems with any of them in 3200 rounds. I think this is the best blow-back design I have shot including the Walther PP, PPK and PPK/s and Sig 230. Nothing the matter with the quality, accuracy or reliability. I realize no product is perfect and have had even Glocks crap out on me but not yet with the Mak.

The last PM I bought was December 2001....paid 150 out the door for an unissued Bulgie milsurp with all accs.

Have not seen a Makarov for less than 150 since.

At the paltry excuse for a gunshow today in Charleston WV, I saw two Maks..... one EG in near-unissued condition for $275. Wow. The other a commercial russian IJ70 with ajustable sights in 80% condition for $225. Could not talk the owner of the Russian below $200. The days of inexpensive PMs are over. Glad I bought all of mine when I had a chance.

Pick 'em up while you can, boys-n-girls.

If I meet up with some one with a working makarov one day, I'll give it a fair shake, but I won't spend money one first.

Blades: If you ever get to Traverse City, MI, give me an e-mail. You can try my E. German. It'll make a believer out of you.

Tim

Here's another vote for the Makarov if you don't already own one buy several now. They're the best handgun value on the market for the money spent. I own two East Germans and a Russian high capacity .380 and I'll buy a Bulgarian when I run across one to add to my collection.
