Tired of looking for the "right" rifle

Is it just me or do these statements contradict each other.

Tired of looking for the "right" rifle
and you will continue to be tired as long as your looking for hardware solutions to software problems. Plenty of bear and deer have been killed with a Winchester 30/30. it ain't the rifle;)

contradiction

I noticed the same thing Mavracer.

Sometimes I just poke around to see how many there are.
It keeps me sharp when setting out in the woods during hunting season.:)

You seem to be well versed in the writings and terminology of a very favorite person of mine.

I upset several acquaintances and family member when quizzed on the "accuracy" of my rifles.

"How does it shoot?" they ask. I usually reply that is is a very accurate piece, and can put 3 to 5 shots inside of 4 inches if I do my part at 100 meters.

Disappointed, they begin to talk about nebulous groups fired at hundreds of meters that would be hard-pressed to be covered by any of our currently circulated round currency. Then, condescendingly and with a twinge of sarcasm, they ask if I'm sure that's all the better the rifle can do from the bench.

"Oh, I don't shoot it from the bench," I reply. "It's already sighted in..."

I guess I'm just an elitist...

I don't have a good reason that I don't like the 06, just that every one I shot i personally couldn't get to group well. I'm not by any means a superior marksman, but I am putting in good time at the range with my guns. Can't explain it but I doubt I will ever buy another 30 06.

You're right. There's no way that you could explain this statement, especially after you already wrote:

The last Savage I owned was a 30 06 and would almost put 3 shots through the same hole at 100 yards. It had the accustock and my 114 Classic does not.......

I heard that the 114 was no good. And the 7 Mag ruins too much meat. Get a 30-30. :)

I have a few rifles and I enjoy shooting all of them. I reload for all of them and just enjoy the challenge of working up loads that will group less than an inch. I have a couple of 7 mm mags that I load for and I enjoy them a lot. I also load and shoot for .243, 270 WSM, .308, and .325 WSM. I do a fair amount of deer and elk hunting as well. Bottom line is that any one of them will work for hunting. Well, maybe I wouldn't take a .243 elk hunting, but lots of folks around here do.

But the thing is when developing accurate loads, it takes a lot of experimenting and a lot of shooting. On top of that, it is more work to find a good combination of bullets and powders for the 7mm mags that I shoot. Whereas it's pretty easy to find a good shooting load for the .308 or .243.

My 7 mm mags are definitely versatile. But if I had to pick just one rifle that was easy to find good loads for plus be completely reliable in performance, I would have to go with my .308. As for long range performance, there are a lot of military snipers out there who use a .308 to make shots out beyond 1000 yards.

Just about any Savage rifle chambered in any common hunting caliber will do fine for deer hunting. Just pick one and start shooting. A lot.

Oh, I have read, a bit ...... and The Good Colonel is enjoyable reading.

The name of this sub-forum is "The Art of the Rifle", after all, and I don't think it is meaning the aesthetic beauty of rifles.

So many of the questions posed here have been answered long before ......

Before my grandpa died when my dad was a kid, he shot and killed a 200 or so lb buck with a .22 LR by shooting it in the head.I want to follow this tradition but I dont want to wound a deer and let it go die somewhere on our big farm, but I will know where its at when I smell it:eek: He was a crackshot none the less. :)
