Tips for a first time gun owner?

You didn't mention your age. However, you should not train yourself. Get an NRA certified instructor to take you to a range. Learn the basics of stance, grip, breathing, aim, trigger squeeze, and follow-through. If you are below (+/-) 20, go to a Wildlife & Fisheries Hunter Education 10-hour course that gives all the safety training. It was important that you asked this group! Thanks!

A couple of things that have already been said but bear repeating:

1. Read the manual. Seriously. Read it.
2. Get insurance with firearm protection.
3. Tear the gun down after you read the manual, but before you do anything else and clean it. Use a good gun oil. Engine oil is for engines.
4. Take an educational approach to firearms and read consistently, at least one thing every day, to increase your knowledge base.
5. Don't invest in cheap guns. Buyer's remorse is no bueno.
6. Don't sell or trade anything.
