As I point out, that may not include your assailant---or assailants.

Thats when I would feed them six-nine .22s in a second and a half.

The smallest defense cartridge I prefer is the 9mm Luger, but I can make my Beretta 71 .22lr and Colt 1908 .25 ACP sound like a machine gun and my .22 revolvers sound like automatics. Out to 7yds I hardly ever miss. They might get me, but they'd get hurt.

I took that to post in some thread about something. Best string was nine shots in IIRC 1.2 seconds distance was 5 yards. Ammo was solid CCI mini-mags. I think it would hurt, but not for long. Those holes scattered around on the thorax were from the hip.

I know, I know we can't tell how a defense scenario will take place and bigger is better and the FBI report says X and, etc, etc, etc. Thats all true but, personally, especially with my skill level, I'd rather have my Model 71 than a pointy stick.

Good luck with Johnny methhead.

As for a hit most anywhere from a sub caliber, I'd be more afraid I'd make him mad and incurr his wrath than it being likely the shot would take the fight out of him.

I've never met Johnny. But I can pop off three body-of-mass .380's at 10 yards in 2 seconds. Mind-over-matter is one thing. Mind-over-270-grains-of-lead is another...

If the day comes when I "consider" that my gun can be used to deter a criminal by it's mere presence as any manor of tactics, or that putting one round in Bubba from a mouse gun will cause him to cease hostilities, then I hope some body kicks me in the butt real hard--right after they slap me upside the head.

Yes, the gun in it's self MAY be a deterent--for any RATIONAL assailant--and it may not be. Good luck with Johnny methhead.

Some knowledeable people, who don't agree with the mousegun deterrent theory, would recommend filing the sights off your little .25 or .32 auto. I'd recommend waxing it up real nice, also.

Therein lies the real beauty of this situation. We can each determine what is acceptable and sufficient for us and our lifestyle. In other words, to each...his own.

Plenty of people have walked away (or stumbled away) from "one-stop-shots" with 9mm, .40S&W and .45 ACP. Or 3-4 shots plus of the same calibers. Unless you are toting a rifle, the discussion is moot. A handgun is a poor substitute for a real weapon. Heck, even the 5.56 and .30 M1 carbine are often ineffective. But a handgun is the best weapon we have in most SD situations. Stop worrying about caliber and learn to shoot. Caliber choice is a foolish place to put your faith when you should be focusing on skill level.

Elmer Keith (a big bore kind of guy) stated that a 22 was small till it was pointed at you.

I also stand by the evidence of DGU usage as compared to conjecture about one's tushy.

When two old guys with 22 mag minis saved a waitress from a 12 gauge carrying holdup guy in FL - their rear-ends were safe. Not so much for the BG.

I hate when the original poster comes back and deletes their original post.
It's like nothing makes sense in the thread after that.

THIS is why one has to remember that the Internet is FOREVER! ala FACEBOOK...etc...

Tiny vs Effecti9ve
I see that one of the biggest recurring topics here is, 'How tiny a gun can I carry and still defend myself?'
IMO, the whole idea of carrying a gun is to carry enough gun to do the job, to be easily handled and to be easily hidden and that I'll carry.
1) How much do you value the lives of your loved ones and your own life? Going for the lightest powered round you can get away with is like getting the cheapest brakes for your car or the cheapest life preserver your kids will wear. I carry something I have high confidence in, not something what works some times.
2) Those itty-bitty guns are not hard to hold at the range while punching paper but in the rain, while covered in blood or under high stress your motor skills will likely go south. I danged sure want a gun that I can handle under the worst conditions possible. A little gun with a grip you hold with 2 fingers is likely not it.
3) 99% of people are oblivious to their surroundings. I've carried guns for 35 years. 3 times I've had people notice my gun. It's another thing that is almost not worth worrying about. YOU'LL know you're carrying a gun, unless you pull it out and wave it around no one else will know.
4) Let's go back to how much your life and your loved ones are worth to you. I hear this, "The gun you carry is better than the gun at home' all the time. Well, let's be blunt if your butt ain't worth carrying a useable gun then your butt ain't worth much to you. Some bad guy will have a gun/knife/club because he WILL use it on a victim. If you don't wanna be that victim then put your danged gun on your person every time you leave the house.
The End

On some mod discussion, decided to close this because of the OP deleting the first post. While we can retrieve it - nah, just shut it down.
