Ticks!!!

Nothing "old wives' tale" about Paw-Paw's sulfur thing. It definitely works.

As a kid, I'd peel down to undies and check for ticks, doing a wipe-down with a kerosene-soaked rag. Instantly eliminated seed ticks.

Art,
aren't you glad that since then, they've developed a shampoo for that. :D

DOnt them guinnas lay green eggs? :) sulpher does indeed work, but if the well water smells like it you have a bacteria growing in there makes it smell that way. The newer water softners have a way to remove this and make the water better. Mine smells like that at certain times of the year.

I use bio spot on them dogs, works great. I also spray this stuff called bug free back yard. Sure keeps them nasty little buggers away.

How do you guys keep Guineas home?

I was wondering about that too. I like the idea of using Guineas, but unless you fence them in, how do you prevent them from taking off in all directions?

Feed em a teeny amount of cheap guinea chow once a day,,,
Give em a small secure place to roost at night,,,
You won't be able to run em off.

Guinea fowl

Just as aarond stated, they're like barn cats feed them, give them shelter and they'll stay forever. (damn noisy things) they know a good thing when they see it.

Yeah. The price of kerosene is outrageous and it's hard to find. :D

Oh great I was all excited about these birds till you maid them sound like my relatives.

ticks

Be careful with ticks and Lyme disease. I personally know of 2 very healthy and normal college age folks who had awful times due to Lyme infection. The one young man has had mental health issues and may never be right again.

Permanone as a treatment on clothes is a good start. I have also heard that fowl, as in chickens and guinea hens (?) can help with ticks, and many country places around here will have chickens/guinea's about. Course then you will have coyote, hawk and owl problems.

My girlfriends neighbors have Guinea hens and they wander through everybody's yards but nobody complains because they do keep the tick population down. There is still plenty around because the deer run through at night and I guess drop more off. I can usually tell if it will be a good hunting year up in the mountains just by the amount of ticks you pick up walking around in the fall. Anyway, the birds do not get them all, but they do help quite a bit.

A strong dose of B vitamins seems to do the trick against insects.
It has a distinctly sulfur odor.
Maybe that's the key to it working.

There are a lot of LoneStar ticks in fla... They have a white dot on their back.

The same little buggers showed up here about 5 years ago in droves. Ive heard they track your CO2 emissions from long distances away. They track you and move much quicker than other ticks.

Ive always been told to avoid burning or coating ticks in soap/vasoline/motor oil/etc. as these techniques can cause the tick to vomit into your open wound before detaching. The vomit contains far more concentrated levels of bacteria/viruses than the ticks saliva.

If U have fire ants..U won't have ticks.....

Somebody forgot to tell that to both the fire ants and the ticks here in Fl. We've got both.

Not only that, but I think that's a classic case of the cure being worse than the disease ;).

If they can make a liquid for my dog that is applied externally and works impeccably that lasts for 30 days, why cant they do the same for people?

^^^ Probably because dogs are generally less prone to lawsuits and don't live long enough for the chemicals to cause any ill effects.
