Throw in Your Pocket Gun?

Postby Armyguy on Fri 14 Aug 2009 7:15 pm
Besides my Glock 26 for EDC, I want to get a small pistol or revolver that can easily be dropped in my pocket. Sort of a quick "on-the-go" gun that is simple to carry. I like the idea of a Ruger LCP with a side clip to just hang inside my belt line. I also like the Kel-tec PF-9 for pocket carry. A Ruger LCR could do the trick, but getting a little bigger. What are your thoughts and recommendation on this? What small "on-the-go" gun do you carry or recomend?
Major, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Ruger LCR has worked well for me...

... with a slightly trimmed down SimplyRugged Pocket Protector. A lot of forum members have recommended a DeSantis Nemesis for the LCR. I don't really like having a handgun in a pocket with nothing around the trigger guard, so I'm a fan of pocket holsters.

My "toss in the pocket, walk out the door and forget about its" are my Kel-Tec P32 and NAA Mini in .22mag. I've carried both with and without a pocket holster. IMO the only advantage in using a holster on these two is that it keeps it upright in the pocket at all times. If using a pocket holster, I prefer simple leather over the Nemesis, therfore I get my pocket holsters from www.rkbaholsters.com.

After owning and selling a number of j-frames and Kel-Tecs, my only trusted pocket gun is my Kahr PM9.

I also own (but do not carry) a Ruger LCP. If I had more faith in the cartridge, I would carry it.

YMM(and probably will)V

It's hot as Hell here in Texas too, but I can still conceal my Kahr P45 :)

Through in your Pocket Gun

hdjeff,
Thanks for that thought. I looked up your Rohrbaugh pistol on Gun Broker and it looks great! However, they want $1,000.00 for it. Are they that expensive?

Yep, that's the going rate, about the same for the Seecamp .380.

While I haven't owned a Rohrbaugh, I have owned a Seecamp .380 and it's well worth the asking price IMO. The only reason I got rid of it is cause I'm a baby when it comes to recoil :o and man did that thing hurt. Sold a Seecamp .32 to get the .380....now one day I'm gonna pick up another .32.

I've been visiting the Scottsdale, AZ area the past few days. I was concealing a PPK in SS pocket; no problem; no printing. Kept keys, etc. in other pocket....

If carrying single action cocked and locked doesn't bother you, you might also look at the Sig P238. It's a clone of the Colt Mustang. I own it and a Ruger LCP. I can shoot the Mustang better but usually wind up carrying the LCP whenever I'm wearing shorts because of the light weight.

I've used a Taurus 650, Smith & Wesson 442, Kel-Tec PF-9 and Glock 27 in that role in the past. Currently, it's filled by a Smith & Wesson 638. From the time I put my pants on in the morning, until I take them off at night the little J frame is always with me.

When leaving the house I usually throw on something bigger, and the pocket gun becomes a BUG.

Kel-Tec P32. Mine's been completely reliable so far. While the recoil in and of itself isn't bad, the size and ergonomics of the gun are such that you'd not wanna shoot it for hours at the range, but for self-defense situations, that's not really a problem. It's almost incredible how thin and light that gun is, it's no more a burden to carry than a cell phone. It's actually thinner and lighter than probably most .22 or .25 caliber pocket pistols out there even though it's a .32 auto.

My recommendation, after many years of research and searching, is the Keltec P32. Just learn to shoot it. Recoil is mild, it weighs nothing, holds 8 rounds, is accurate, small, and very flat. They are reliable guns.

I pocket carry exclusively. I've carried all the old variations, from .22 mag-.38spl-.357 magnum DA Derringers, .22lr Bobcats (a couple), Model 36 S&W Chief Special .38, AMT Backup .45, Titan .25..more I will remember tomorrow.
I own several of the 90's "compact" big name handguns...too big for Pocket Carry.
Here is my current rotation for the pocket:

From the left..S&W 442 Airweight .38 Spl, Seecamp LWS .32 ACP, Kahr mag.
Bottom row..Ruger LCP .380 ACP, Kahr PM9 9mm Luger

I recently added this. NAA Black Widow .22 magnum. I don't carry it yet, as I do not yet trust my skill with it. Not a novice's handgun!

I don't like the Ruger LCP trigger much, and frankly, I carry the Kahr PM9 EDC,
but the Ruger LCP is the easiest significant caliber handgun I've found to pocket carry.

I pocket carry several guns in rotation. A Kel-Tec P3-AT and an S&W 442 are the most frequent. An inside the pocket holster is important to hold the gun in the proper position in the pocket and to prevent bumping the magazine button and releasing the magazine unintentionally.
Also don't carry anything else in the pocket with the gun. A poster on another forum reported firing a Kel-Tec P32 by trying to remove it from a pocket containing keys and a pen and some other items. This would very embarrassing. A single action NAA with no trigger guard might be an exception.

Mine in order of preference:
1. Kahr PM9 - in DeSantis Superfly pocket holster (or Fist 1A hybrid IWB holster)
2. Kel-Tec P3AT - in DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster
3. S&W 638 - in DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster (or Fist 1A hybrid IWB holster)

1 Kel-tec P-11 Has virtually lived in my pocket for the last 5 years
2 Ruger LCP I throw it in my pocket when its hot but I feel "inadequate"
3 Taurus 651 Protector Like it a lot but I Know it's there
