No ID's: Ammunition sold to undercover police
GRAYSLAKE — Three gun dealers face charges of illegal sale of ammunition at the Lake County Sportsmen's Gun Show on the Lake County Fairgrounds, police said.
Police arrested the three men Sunday. They also found violations at the show related to unsecured weapons and purchased manuals that provide detailed instructions for unlawful acts, according to Police Chief Larry Herzog.
Police detectives were able to purchase ammunition without showing the required Firearms Owner Identification Card or any identification to the three gun dealers who were arrested.
Charged with unlawful sale of ammunition were Calvin Willard, 48, of Niles, Mich., representing Action Arms Ammo of Niles; Roland Gavriolvoch, 74, of DeMotte, Ind., representing Pelcher's Shooters Supply of Lansing, Ill.; and Gerald Raether, 67, of West Allis, Wis.
The three men were released on signature bonds and are scheduled to appear Nov. 6 in Lake County Circuit Court in Waukegan, police said.
Herzog said police continue to find temporary use permit violations at the show regarding unsecured weapons.
These violations Sunday, he said, included two loose weapons on a table next to the show manager's display; a table with 90 to 100 weapons tied two at time to each other but not to the table; and a pistol displayed with a seated magazine.
Herzog said police purchased the following manuals at the gun show:
The Hayduke Silencer Book — Quick and Dirty Homemade Silencers.
How to Make Disposable Silencers — A Complete Guide.
Full Auto Modification Manual — Selective Fire Conversions.
In a prepared statement, Herzog said: "Although not unlawful, these publications provide detailed instructions for unlawful acts, and, according to gun show management, are not sold at the gun show."
The police chief said the gun show manager was notified of these violations at 10 a.m. Sunday, yet the instruction books on homemade silencers and full automatic conversions remained displayed past 12:30 p.m.
A Grayslake Village Board meeting to vote on the sale of guns at the fairgrounds was canceled Tuesday and rescheduled to Nov. 7.
Mayor Pat Carey is backing a resolution affirming the village's opposition to presenting firearms shows at the fairgrounds.
